Job description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

What We Do:

The Trials & Litigation Division is essential to DOC’s efforts to ensure the integrity, professionalism, and accountability of all members of service. The Division is responsible for investigating disciplinary acts of misconduct by agency personnel, including excessive use of force, undue familiarity with detainees, firearms regulation violations, erroneous discharges, escapes, improper outside employment, and conduct unbecoming a member of the Department or discrediting the agency. It also investigates allegations of sexual assault committed by staff and/or detainees and liaises with external agencies such as the Department of Investigation, District Attorney’s Offices, and NYPD.

Why DOC:

The Trials & Litigation Division seeks qualified candidates eager to deepen their understanding of the criminal justice system. The division includes both attorneys and support staff to ensure timely resolution of misconduct cases. As a team member, you’ll enjoy:

  • The opportunity to make an impact on the agency and the City of New York
  • Collaborating with dedicated professionals, including attorneys, former police detectives, and city prosecutors
  • Training opportunities in investigations, forensics, law, and criminal justice, both internally and through external agencies
  • Comprehensive benefits, including a 457(b) retirement plan, medical, dental, vision, generous paid leave, and more
Responsibilities:

Investigators ensure DOC staff act according to the Code of Conduct and with professionalism. They examine, uncover, and analyze the behavior of staff, recommending discipline when warranted. Under supervision, Investigation Level 3 Investigators are responsible for collecting and analyzing forensic, audio, video, written, medical, and testimonial evidence; questioning staff and detainees; liaising with external agencies; drafting reports; and testifying before administrative tribunals. They also learn DOC procedures, rules, regulations, disciplinary procedures, and the criminal justice system.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of full-time experience in relevant fields such as criminal justice, law enforcement, investigation, or related operational areas; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or
  3. Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
Preferred Skills:
  • Ten years of experience in the field
  • Strong interest in criminal justice/law enforcement
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Multilingual skills are desirable
  • Valid driver’s license
Additional Information:

You may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance. Residency in NYC is generally required within 90 days, with exceptions for certain employees. The City of New York is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
