Job summary

Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHALA) seeks a Substance Abuse Specialist to provide engagement and linkage to services for individuals with substance use disorders. This role works under the Program Manager and requires bilingual abilities, strong communication, and knowledge of local resources.

Position is 35 hours per week with compensation between $25.00 and $27.00 per hour, based on experience. On-site work in Los Angeles, CA, with equal opportunity employment and benefits.

Qualifications

• High School/GED diploma required.
• Current certification as a Certified Addiction Counselor or similar.
• Familiarity with local community resources for homelessness/low income.
• Bilingual; Spanish/English speaking preferred.
• Good English writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct ongoing substance use assessments, including the ASAM screening tool.
• Provide individual, group, and/or family counseling through the recovery continuum.
• Help clients access community-based self-help groups, residential and detox programs.
• Teach harm-reduction skills to manage cravings, triggers, and high-risk behaviors.
• Work with FSP-ICM team to deliver SUD services, including MAT.
• Build partnerships with community resources for linkage and support.
• Complete documentation and ensure program compliance.
• Handle a small caseload of members.
• Collaborate with all FSP teams serving SUD clients.
• Educate family members on recovery process.
