UNC Health is seeking a Patient Access Intake Specialist for its Johnston Health location in Smithfield, NC. This per diem role supports outpatient services with day-shift scheduling and onsite work.

The position emphasizes accurate data entry in ADT systems, insurance verification, and timely patient registration. The incumbent will schedule appointments, verify demographics, and provide upfront cost estimates while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of customer service and/or clerical experience required.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience with registration or healthcare settings preferred.

Responsibilities

• Verifies key ADT information (insurance verification, demographics) for accuracy and safety.
• Schedules new and follow-up appointments; communicates cancellations to provider.
• Completes and documents regulatory forms; ensures proper scanning and legibility.
• Uses price estimation tool to provide accurate patient cost estimates.
• Meets targets for upfront deposits and balances; assists with collections.
• Participates in QA by using system work queues to minimize errors.

This is an Outpatient Location. The hours for the Patient Access Intake Specialist position are Monday - Friday 5:30a-6:00p and Saturdays.

Summary

This role is responsible in ensuring that patient access processing is performed in accordance with procedure and documented in a timely and accurate manner in ADT and other clinical information systems. Meets departmental/organizational outcome targets for process accuracy and timeliness.

Responsibilities

• Ensures and verifies key ADT information (insurance verification, patient and guarantor demographics, etc.) is current and accurate to ensure patient safety, charging, coding, insurance processing, and billing accuracy.
• Schedules all new and follow-up patient appointments as required. Attempt to reschedule cancellations whenever possible. Communicates cancellations to provider as necessary.
• Completes and documents all governmental, regulatory, financial, and contractual forms in accordance to procedure. Ensures document is scanned/saved to correct location and is legible.
• Utilizes price estimation tool, when applicable, as part of the registration process to provide the most accurate estimate to patients
• Meets departmental target for up front collections to include deposits, estimated amounts due, co-pays, and/or prior balances.
• Actively participates in departmental QA by utilizing system work queues, making a personal effort to reduce individual errors, and making corrections. Utilizes system work queues as a daily part of the registration process to minimize errors.
