Job summary

Asheville Humane Society is seeking an Intake Specialist to welcome animals into care and help reunite lost pets with families. You will process admissions, record keeping, and conduct basic medical tasks such as vaccinations and microchipping.

The role requires strong communication, reliability, and the ability to follow established animal care protocols in a busy shelter environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Intermediate computer skills and multiline phone system experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to follow animal handling, restraint, medical and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Process animal admissions and Return to Owner outcomes with required paperwork and records.
  • Identify incoming animals via microchip scanning, photography, and ID checks.
  • Provide preventative medical care including vaccinations, deworming, microchipping.
  • Assist Animal Control Officers with admissions and document provided information.
  • Monitor and respond to processing-related emails and voicemails promptly.
  • Guide community members regarding animal-related concerns per AHS policies.
  • Safely handle and restrain animals using proper techniques.
  • Monitor animals in processing for housing, food, water, and care needs.
  • Clean and disinfect animal areas, dishes, laundry, and equipment.
  • Move animals from processing to general shelter when space allows.
  • Observe, report, and document animal health and behavior concerns.
  • Maintain knowledge of AHS programs to assist the community.
  • Assist with opening/closing Admissions spaces, including Community Sheltering Center.
  • Keep processing areas clean, organized, and presentable for public and staff.
  • Monitor Admissions supplies and notify leadership when restocking is needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
