Job Description

Job Goal: To provide guidance and counseling services to students, parents, and teachers and to coordinate the guidance program in the school to which assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Georgia Service Certificate in School Counseling (P-12).
  • Master’s Degree or higher.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prompt and regular attendance.
  • Coordinates and oversees intake and exit services for Horizons students; confers with districts, schools, local agencies, community representatives, and parents including but not limited to program attendance, student enrollment, student records and withdrawal procedures, and facilitates communication of the same amongst program staff and parents.
  • Meets with students to establish individual goals that will lead to student's successful transition into or within the Horizons program; identifies and places special education students appropriate to the Horizons program; requests Individual Education Plans (IEP) and distributes to necessary school personnel.
  • Coordinates with school office staff and participates in activities relating to attendance, student enrollment and withdrawal.
  • Compiles program and student data; prepares reports for the county office, school districts, state and federal agencies relating to assigned functions.
  • Prepares student enrollment, and withdrawal packets; maintains and updates student waiting/contact lists; notifies school districts and other agencies of available vacancies, withdrawals and/or suspensions.
  • Enters initial student data in student information system, monitoring and adjusting pertinent information regularly to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality of recorded information; serves as custodian of records.
  • Requests records for incoming students including transcripts, test results, and health records from previous schools; forwards records to community or institutional school office personnel; converts units noted in transcripts to County Office system.
  • Provides applications for colleges/other post-high school institutions and helps students’ complete applications.
  • Assists students with evaluation and interpretation of their educational or vocational career goals.
  • Provides alternatives rather than decisions in the counseling process.
  • Provides job placement information regarding available jobs in the community.
  • Assists school programs by providing information and being part of special education placement committees when requested.
  • Assists with constructing the master schedule and with student class assignments.
  • Monitors the entry of student grades; may prepare and forward student transcripts and other records as necessary.
  • Receives, and responds to requests regarding student files including, but not limited to, enrollment/withdrawal, attendance, transcripts, grades, and health/immunization.
  • Provides feedback and makes recommendations to Administrator on the effectiveness of services.
  • Attends and participates in staff, educational and other meetings as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities including:
  • Medium Work: Exerting 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds as needed to move objects.

Terms of Employment:

200 days - Salary shall be paid consistent on the System’s approved salary schedule. Length of work year and hours of employment shall be established by the system.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Principal.
