Saint Joseph Hospital - Elgin is seeking an Insurance Verification Specialist to contact health plan carriers and obtain eligibility information, ensuring accurate data entry in the patient’s account. The role involves assisting patients with understanding coverage and responsibilities, coordinating prior to services, collecting payments, and advising patients on benefits both in person and by phone.

Qualifications include hospital admissions or billing experience, familiarity with payer

Qualifications

• Minimum two years’ experience in hospital admissions or billing setting preferred.
• Well versed in authorization processes for all payers.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance policies.
• Excellent organization and time management skills along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to learn quickly, work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Ability to maintain good working relationships.
• Attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Ability to work in a demanding environment.
• Problem solving skills.
• Proficient computer skills.
• HS Diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

• Contact health plan carriers to obtain eligibility information and enter it into the patient’s account.
• Assist patients in understanding their insurance coverage and financial responsibilities.
• Coordinate payment for scheduled/elective services per payer specifications before services.
• Collect payments and discuss payment arrangements; create estimates.
• Advise patients on insurance benefits in person and by phone; validate physician orders when needed.
• Provide excellent customer service regarding insurance inquiries.
• Handle insurance queries from internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare reports on insurance verification activities for management.
