Job summary

The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance, Consumer Affairs Division, is seeking a Complaint Investigator to join a team protecting the insurance-buying public. This position is located at Harry S Truman State Office Building, 301 W High Street, Jefferson City, Missouri.

Starting salary is $49,371.60 as base pay; if eligible for a years-of-service pay differential, it will be added to total compensation.

Qualifications

• Knowledge through a bachelor’s degree or work experience with specialization in insurance, risk management, business or public administration or closely related areas.
• Working knowledge of applicable insurance statutes and regulations as well as industry standards.
• Proficient with common computer applications.
• Excellent customer service and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Apply working knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the business of insurance and service contracts.
• Apply knowledge of industry standards for investigations.
• Answer incoming phone calls, address concerns and/or offer resolutions to the caller.
• Meet with stakeholders, legislators and consumers in person or by phone and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Review and investigate complaints made against insurance producers, business entity producers, other licensees, unlicensed individuals and entities who are suspected of operating without a valid license and/or violating insurance laws.
• Self-direct the investigative caseload, by opening and maintaining cases in the web based case management system with minimal intervention.
• Determine scope of and conduct an investigation, knowledge of principles of identification, preservation and presentation of evidence to write clear and concise reports.
• Use knowledge of interviewing techniques, including effective methods of obtaining information from hostile or reluctant witnesses. Contact witnesses and public officials under conditions requiring tact and good judgment.
