Summary

The Insulator is responsible for leading and performing the installation, removal, repair, and maintenance of insulation systems on industrial equipment, piping, ductwork, tanks, vessels, and other components. This position provides direction and guidance to insulation crews while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and company policies. The Lead Insulator serves as a working lead and is expected to actively participate in insulation activities while coordinating daily crew assignments and productivity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of industrial insulation experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience installing and repairing various industrial insulation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of insulation materials, metal jacketing, and weatherproofing systems.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of industrial insulation materials, systems, and installation methods.
  • Knowledge of metal jacketing, lagging, weatherproofing, and insulation finishing techniques.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and crew coordination skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve installation and fit-up issues in the field.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices, including fall protection, confined space entry, and hazard recognition.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, insulation cutting equipment, and fabrication tools.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and develop less experienced employees.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadlines while maintaining quality standards.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and direct insulation crews in the installation, maintenance, and removal of insulation systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and work packages to plan and execute work activities.
  • Install various types of insulation materials, including fiberglass, mineral wool, calcium silicate, ceramic fiber, and removable insulation blankets.
  • Measure, cut, shape, and fit insulation materials to piping, vessels, tanks, equipment, and duct systems.
  • Install and repair metal jacketing, lagging, and weatherproofing materials.
  • Plan daily work assignments and coordinate manpower, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Monitor crew productivity and workmanship to ensure project schedules and quality requirements are achieved.
  • Inspect completed work for compliance with customer specifications and industry standards.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of insulation materials and equipment.
  • Assist with material takeoffs and identify material requirements for assigned projects.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, reports, and daily work records as required.
  • Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman insulators.
  • Identify and address safety concerns, hazards, and potential worksite issues.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; heavier weights with assistance.
  • Ability to work in awkward positions and confined spaces when required.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work from scaffolding, and perform work at elevated heights.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements involving hands, arms, shoulders, and back.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
  • hard hat, safety glasses, face shield, gloves, hearing protection, FR clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, respiratory protection and other project-specific PPE.
  • Work is performed in industrial facilities, fabrication shops, construction sites, refineries, petrochemical plants, and maintenance environments.
  • Regular exposure to dust, sparks, metal shavings, noise, vibrations, and moving equipment.
  • May be exposed to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, and rain.
  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors depending on project requirements.
  • May be required to work at heights, in confined spaces, and around heavy machinery and energized equipment.
  • Noise levels may range from moderate to high, requiring hearing protection.
