Responsibilities

The Building Automation Control Specialist supports the maintenance and operations of building mechanical systems, control systems, chilled water or steam plants, and associated metering to ensure building systems operate within optimal indoor environmental conditions for research laboratories and other work areas. This role leads special projects, oversees control projects, and may direct contractors or other personnel. Additional responsibilities include orienting new employees, responding quickly to outages during inclement weather, working with personnel and contractors to achieve optimal indoor environments, developing operational procedures, recognizing and resolving issues to maintain environmental integrity and productivity, evaluating and recommending improvements to instrumentation, analyzing and improving custom programming for environmental conditions or energy efficiencies, installing and maintaining HVAC control systems, troubleshooting and repairing HVAC control system problems, collaborating with other trades to maintain, operate, and repair controls equipment, commissioning and re‑commissioning building systems, building custom graphics for BAS controls, installing and programming programmable controllers, and maintaining documentation and resources regarding control systems.

Job Scope
  • No supervisory responsibilities or duties.
  • May direct contractors or work as part of a team on specific projects.
  • May orient new employees and provide guidance to contract staff.
  • May need to respond to outages quickly during periods of inclement weather.
  • May work with other trades to maintain, operate, and repair controls equipment.
  • May work with leadership, engineers and equipment manufacturers to trend data and develop programs to improve energy efficiency.
Requirements

Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent education required.
  • Graduate of a trade or vocational school with courses in blueprint reading, mathematics, physics, and specialized curriculum in HVAC&R maintenance preferred.

Experience

  • Five years of HVAC&R experience, with strong knowledge of digital and pneumatic controls systems, hydronics, refrigeration, building control techniques, and programming.
  • Journey level experience as an HVAC mechanic.
  • Experience using a computer to manage building control systems and/or chilled water systems required.

Licensure / Certification

  • CFC certification required.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s license with a good driving record required.

Other Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of state and local codes that pertain to the position’s area of responsibility.
  • Ability to analyze problems and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Good understanding of programming and automated building control.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • May be asked to provide basic general purpose maintenance tools.
  • May be required to work additional hours and shifts.
  • Position is deemed emergency personnel during emergency weather conditions.
  • Must travel to different locations to work.
