HVAC SPECIALIST (Open)

The HVAC Specialist maintains, repairs, installs HVAC and related systems, supports complex projects, and ensures reliable facility operations.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, troubleshoot, analyze/evaluate, repair and install facility HVAC & R and BAS systems and equipment as directed, including large and complex systems.
- Lead specialty projects related to HVAC & R and BAS installations.
- Perform, direct and inspect HVAC & R and BAS installations, work orders, change orders, emergency repairs, and other maintenance to ensure code and regulation compliance.
- Perform and oversee all preventative and routine maintenance on HVAC & R systems and other equipment.
- Create or modify BAS programming to add, delete, or change equipment points or functions, or to collect data for analysis.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and maintain machinery, electrical and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and manufacturer specifications, using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments.
- Identify and secure appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining plant‑engineering capability of the facility, including development of systems for control of utilities.
- Collaborate with other facility staff to ensure timely completion of all projects.
- Provide direction, guidance and technical assistance as needed to other staff.
- Document and maintain all required records and information pertinent to assignments, work orders, instruction manuals, blueprints and other such materials.
- Provide training and technical updates to other department staff to expand department capabilities.
- Update practices as necessary to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Research new techniques, materials and equipment and make recommendations to management.
- May be called upon to serve as emergency staff during emergency weather conditions.
- May be asked to provide own transportation and travel to other Carilion work sites, and may be required to work at other Carilion facilities to meet staffing needs.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of a trade or vocational school with courses in blueprint reading, mathematics, and physics with specialized curriculum in HVAC maintenance preferred.
- Five years of HVAC experience in commercial or healthcare related maintenance required.
- Appropriate level CFC Certification required.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License preferred for hospital positions and required for Property Maintenance positions.
- Good understanding of BAS programming and automated building control.
- Familiarity with all relevant codes for hospitals and commercial occupancies.
- Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to communicate with co‑workers and others.
- Ability to use a computerized work order control system.
- Ability to maintain required records and follow verbal and written instructions.
- May be asked to provide basic general purpose maintenance tools.
