Job summary

Job description

The Instrumentation and Controls Engineer is responsible for engineering and design of instruments & control systems for processing equipment packages. Work is both technical and hands‑on in nature and relies on experience and independent judgment to perform the functions of the job.

Your Responsibilities
  • Establish scope and detailed requirements for all projects with Instrumentation and Controls.
  • Review customer specifications and prepare technical specifications defining the control requirements on the project for third‑party control system Design/Manufacturing Company. Review and manage deliverables of the control system to ensure adherence to the requirements of the project.
  • Provide engineering support to procurement for instrumentation and control systems to develop alternatives which meet specifications, lead times and cost.
  • Work in conjunction with Project Managers/Project Engineers/Designers to ensure that project scope of work for equipment package control system design are clearly defined for the project.
  • Support applications/sales team for instrumentation & control design and specifications and on technical issues related to preparation of proposals.
  • Finalize control system architecture for the equipment package and select control system hardware based on customer specification and project requirement.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials and Component Specifications.
  • Prepare 2‑D and 3‑D AutoCAD General arrangement drawings.
  • Communicate and follow‑up regularly with team members to ensure tasks are completed.
  • Regularly report status to project stakeholders through multiple formal communication methods.
  • Own the technical analysis of customer inquiries, control RFQs, or tenders to determine proposal requirements and scope of supply.
  • Commercial quotation activities include the development of technical descriptions, cost estimates, project schedules and commercial terms.
  • Communicate directly with internal and external customers, evaluate on‑site project conditions during tendering phase.
  • Understand hazardous area classification requirements to finalize design and layout of the electrical/control instrumentation on a package.
  • Size instrument cables, junction boxes, conduit, cable trays and layout of instrument/electrical on the package within the guidelines of Oil & Gas industry codes and standards.
  • Prepare controls schematic, P&ID, cable schedule, wiring diagrams and logic diagrams.
  • Design, develop and debug PLC‑based programs and electrical control systems.
  • Provide support to manufacturing during assembly of the package, inspection, calibration, loop checking and factory acceptance test (FAT).
  • Can support start‑up assistance during commissioning of equipment package at site.
  • Develop operating procedures, acceptance test and validation test plans and protocols.
  • Develop engineering design tools and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy of work.
  • Identify and execute product standardization opportunities and participate in new product development programs.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electronics/Control Engineering.
  • 4+ years Instrument & Controls Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of instrument & controls system design applied to Oil & Gas process equipment packages.
  • Experience in programming PLCs, HMI, sequence logic design, PID loop design and implementation.
  • Technical skills to create, read and understand Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID).
  • Broad knowledge of industry standards (API, IEEE, NEC, NFPA, IEC, etc.).
  • Advanced PC skills including MS Excel and CAD.
  • Logical, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Works well in a cross‑functional, open‑communication environment.

Travel Requirements: Ability to travel domestically 10‑25%.

ADA Requirements: Positions in this function typically require typing, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. The job involves performing complex tasks to close accuracy and quality specifications, and has no disagreeable environmental factors. Compliance with company attendance standards is required. Citations include Concentrated mental and/or visual attention and Sedentary work up to 10 lbs at times.

Work Environment: This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
