Job summary

System One, Inc. is seeking an Instrument Engineer in Houston, TX to design, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation and safety instrumented systems (SIS) in a chemical manufacturing environment.

You will work onsite with Operations, Maintenance and Process Safety teams to optimize plant performance. The role requires a BS in Electrical, Instrumentation, or Chemical Engineering and 5+ years of instrumentation/controls experience, with PLC and DCS familiarity, alarm management, SIS/SIL/SIF, and

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years in instrumentation, controls, or automation engineering in chemical, petrochemical, refining, or process manufacturing industries.
• Knowledge of instrumentation design, SIS, SIL, SIF, alarm management, interlocks, and safety systems.
• Experience supporting plant operations and maintenance activities involving PLC and DCS systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation and SIS within a chemical plant.
• Collaborate across Operations, Maintenance, Process Safety, and Capital Projects for safe, compliant plant performance.
• Develop instrument specs, datasheets, PIDs, loop and interlock diagrams, and control narratives.
• Support installation, commissioning, calibration and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
• Lead SIS, SIL, and SIF efforts; support PHA, LOPA, MOC, incidents; ensure OSHA PSM and IEC 61511.
• Investigate failures and implement corrective actions to improve alarms and interlocks.
• Support reliability initiatives; develop preventive and predictive maintenance for instrumentation assets.
• Participate in capital/expense projects with design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, reviews.
• Serve as technical lead and mentor to I&E technicians during turnarounds, outages and startups.

Responsibilities

• Design, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation, control systems, and safety instrumented systems (SIS) within a chemical manufacturing environment.
• Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Process Safety, and Capital Projects teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance while maintaining compliance with regulations and industry standards.
• Develop and update instrument specifications, datasheets, engineering standards, P&IDs, loop diagrams, interlock diagrams, and control narratives.
• Support installation, commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation equipment and systems.
• Lead efforts related to Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), and Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), supporting PHA, LOPA, MOC, incident investigations, and ensuring OSHA PSM, IEC 61511 compliance.
• Investigate instrumentation failures and implement corrective actions to improve alarm management, interlocks, and control system performance.
• Support plant reliability initiatives, develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for instrumentation assets.
• Participate in capital and expense projects by providing design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, and technical reviews.
• Serve as a technical leader and mentor to I&E technicians, providing training and coordination during plant turnarounds, outages, and startups.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years of instrumentation, controls, or automation engineering experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining, or process manufacturing industries.
• Knowledge of instrumentation design, SIS, SIL, SIF, alarm management, interlocks, and safety systems.
• Experience supporting plant operations and maintenance activities involving PLC and DCS systems.
