Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Engineering Intern to perform tasks applying standard engineering techniques and procedures, update designs, and assist lead engineers. You will support projects across Global Facilities, Oil, Gas & Chemical, Power, and Water markets, gaining broad exposure to real-world engineering challenges.

Ideal candidates are pursuing an engineering degree, enrolled in a related program, and demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.

Qualifications

  • Pursuit of Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary/technical program related to the work.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Prior internship or consulting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks applying standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Assist lead engineers with project duties and design updates.
  • Support multiple market groups (Global Facilities, Oil, Gas & Chemical, Power, Water) with project work.

Description

Our Engineering Interns are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard engineering techniques and procedures. This includes standard design of engineering systems, correcting and updating designs, assisting lead engineers with various project duties, and other duties as assigned.

Specific assignments and project work vary depending on the market segments. Please see below for information on each market:

Global Facilities

The Global Facilities group is responsible for the planning and design of manufacturing facilities, district energy systems, data centers and mission-critical facilities. This includes work across diverse industries, including aerospace, space and defense, food and beverage, life sciences and technology, consumer products, healthcare and advanced manufacturing, guiding projects from site selection through startup.

Oil, Gas & Chemical

The Oil, Gas & Chemical group is responsible for the planning and design across the energy landscape. This includes project execution for midstream, refining, liquefied natural gas and chemicals, with a strong focus on energy security, biofuels, carbon capture, hydrogen and solutions that advance a sustainable energy future.

Power

The Power group is responsible for the planning, design, and startup of power generation and decarbonization technologies. This includes gas turbines, utility-scale battery storage, hydrogen electrolysis, carbon capture technologies, solar, and nuclear plant services.

Water

The Water group is responsible for the planning and design of facilities and processes related to drinking water supply, treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment, stormwater management, and more. This includes services for all levels of government and a variety of industrial clients.

Qualifications
  • Pursuit of Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program.

  • ABET accreditation strongly preferred.

  • Currently enrolled, and in good standing, in a post-secondary education and/or technical certificate program in a field related to the work done in the department.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
