Job summary

South Sound YMCA is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor in Olympia, WA to teach progressive swimming lessons for children and adults in line with National YMCA standards. You will ensure participant safety and promote YMCA mission while fostering growth and confidence in learners.

The role requires minimum age 16, ability to instruct across skill levels, and certification in CPR/First Aid within 30 days. Training and orientation are provided within specified timelines.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Ability to provide instruction per YMCA standards.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required within 30 days of hire.
• New Employee Orientation within 45 days of hire.
• YMCA trainings within 45 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Teach swimming skills according to YMCA standards and demonstrate progressions.

• Maintain safety rules and ensure a positive, inclusive environment.
• Keep accurate attendance and skill progression records.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching Progressive Swimming lessons for children and adults according to National YMCA standards. Programs are operated in a manner that ensures the safety of the participants and promotes the mission and goals of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Program Teach and demonstrate swimming skills based on YMCA standards. Develop weekly class outlines, demonstrating an orderly progression through skills. Treat all participants fairly and equally, regardless of ability, ensuring the development of positive self-esteem. Discipline according to YMCA policy. Follow YMCA Emergency Procedures, as needed. Ensure participants are aware of, and follow, all safety rules. Facility Keep program area orderly and store equipment appropriately. Report any repair or maintenance issues to Aquatic Management Staff. Administration Maintain accurate attendance and skill progression records. Report mid-session advancement recommendations to Aquatics Management prior to the start of the next session registration. Complete individual evaluations of participants and make recommendations for advancement at the end of each session. Submit request for supplies or equipment to Aquatics Management. Association Obtain additional knowledge through attendance at workshops and trainings and keep certifications current. Obtain all required YMCA trainings within 45 days of hire. Dress according to YMCA and Department Policy. Attend all department and branch staff meetings as scheduled. Assist with other association projects and programs as needed.

Communication & Influence Developing Self & OthersQualifications: QUALIFICATIONS: Incumbent must be at last 16 years’ old Incumbent must have the appropriate educational/employment experience to successfully provide instruction Must pass a swim stroke evaluations test Upon hire: Current Child & Infant and Adult CPR, AED and First Aid must be obtained within 30-days of hire and be current throughout length of employment. South Sound YMCA’s - New Employee Orientation must be obtained within 45-days of hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and talk and hear. Incumbent must be able to move freely and quickly throughout YMCA facilities; communicate effectively with people; and use a computer.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
