Instructor or Assistant Professor, Systems and Cataloging Librarian

The Systems and Cataloging Librarian is responsible for administering the Integrated Library System and performing copy and original cataloging and metadata description in all formats to enhance the discoverability of library collections. The position works collaboratively with other Library faculty and staff in the organization and maintenance of metadata and provides guidance and training on best practices.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Commitment to the Del Mar College and Learning Resources visions and missions.
  • Knowledge of current library trends, practices, and technologies, including integrated library systems and cataloging.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software programs, the internet, electronic resources, and online service delivery.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team building abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in an often rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to travel to campuses and instructional sites.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution.Two (2) years library technical services experience at the professional level.

Demonstrated experience administeringSIRSIDynix or other Integrated Library System.

Demonstrated experience with original and copy cataloging.

Demonstrated experience with Library of Congress classification system.

Preferred Qualifications

Recent academic library experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging formats, includingRDA,LCSH, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.

Demonstrated experience with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) cataloging.

Working knowledge of authority records.

Demonstrated experience with uploadingMARCrecords into Library discovery system platforms.

Working knowledge of cataloging artifacts with historical significance.

Working knowledge of preserving and organizing historical records and documents.

Job Duties

Library Systems:

  • Ensures that Library administrative systems function properly
  • Administers the Integrated Library System
  • Generates reports
  • Works with other Librarians and Library staff so that Integrated Library System functions support Library processes and procedures
  • Provides secondary support for website updates
  • Collaborates with other Librarians and Library staff to develop, document, and maintain Library processes and procedures in Library SharePoint site.

Cataloging:

  • Reads, interprets, and implements cataloging practice documentation.
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains procedures and documentation for cataloging/metadata management.
  • Provides bibliographic control for all library materials.
  • Trains library staff in copy cataloging.
  • Maintains currency with emerging national standards for cataloging and metadata management.

Other Duties:

  • Promotes the delivery of quality information services in a positive, patron-focused and learning-centered environment.
  • Assists with other Library Technical Services functions such as electronic resources and acquisitions.
  • Participates in collection development activities.
  • Serves as librarian liaison to assigned departments.
  • Provides reference services on a limited basis.
  • Provides library instruction on a limited basis.
  • Trains library faculty and staff.
  • Maintains a professional knowledge of library and information science; stays current in developments of specific job related fields.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees and initiatives.
  • Supervises work study employees to process library materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and as needed.
