Job description

The Health Professions and Public Service division at Waubonsee Community College is currently seeking a full-time, tenure-track Instructor of Health Information Technology (HIT) with a commitment to teaching excellence, diversity, equity and holistic student success.

The Health Information Technology (HIT) faculty will deliver comprehensive curriculum and instruction for a range of topics clinical classification systems, health care law, data management, reimbursement systems, data statistics and analysis, health care information systems and other related courses.

The full-time faculty member of HIT will be responsible for the curriculum, instruction, and student learning assessment for Associate in Applied Science degree as well as a Certificate of Achievement. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), on recommendation of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

The program is based at the Downtown Aurora Campus and teaching assignments may include days, evenings and/or weekends. Courses may be offered in various delivery modes, i.e. face-to-face, flex, online, synch-online, and hybrid. The successful candidate will have the option of teaching their schedule in any of the previously listed modalities, including fully remote. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively use instructional and classroom technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Duties and expectations of this position include, but are not limited to:

Designing syllabi, lessons, activities, assignments, and assessments that address the needs of a diverse student population and ensure that students successfully meet program and course objectives and outcomes within a competency-based model (CBE).

Incorporating learning-centered principles and concepts and motivating students to participate actively in all aspects of the educational experience, including advising, tutoring, and career guidance, to promote student engagement, retention, and completion.

Monitor and evaluate student progress and performance to identify barriers and implement support.

Assisting the HIT Program Director in the areas of CBE curriculum development, student success initiatives, student advising, adjunct faculty mentorship, assessment of student learning, support for student clubs and organizations.

Collaborating with team members and industry (i.e. Advisory Committee and employer partners) to design and implement the most effective HIT program that maintains standards, supports certification readiness, and enhance workforce practices.

Participate in accreditation and program assessment to ensure ongoing compliance with CAHIIM standards and alignment with current industry expectations.

Working collaboratively with professional colleagues to serve the needs of students and the community.

Modeling professionalism with excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Bachelor's degree, required

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Certification

Two years of field work (which equals 4000 hours for accreditation requirements)

Teaching experience or Industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of post-secondary teaching experience in Health Information Technology (HIT) or a related field.

Teaching experience at the Vocational/Technical or Community College level highly preferred.

Experience incorporating technology and multimedia applications into teaching and learning process and interest in all forms of alternative learning is highly desirable.

Interdisciplinary focus integrating innovative learning strategies and the demonstrated ability to enhance the success of diverse student populations is essential.

Experience teaching traditionally underserved populations.

Experience teaching online courses.
