Job summary

UNC-Chapel Hill seeks a Visiting Part-time Instructor of Classical Saxophone in the Music Department. The instructor will provide individual lessons, lead a studio class, and coach saxophone quartets for undergraduates and non-majors, preparing students for juries and performances.

Minimum qualifications: a Master’s degree or commensurate professional experience and college teaching; a Doctorate in saxophone performance is preferred, with ensemble coaching experience valued.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Music at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a BMus and BA in Music and an MA and Ph.D. in Musicology for undergraduate and graduate students. Our educational mission is to teach music majors and non-majors, to connect the study of music to the larger understanding of the world, and to guide graduate students as researchers and teachers. We serve the public by presenting performances and academic lectures by students, faculty, and guest artists and scholars. We offer over one hundred concerts and recitals each year, and our facilities include a state-of-the-art auditorium with recording (audio and video) capabilities as well as lighting and sound systems. Our 60 full-time and part-time faculty teach approximately 2500 students during the academic year and another 200 during summer school. Through our teaching, research, and creative activities, we share music's multiplicity of forms and meanings, connecting the study of music to the larger understanding of societies, and affirming music's importance as an expression of humanity.

Position Summary

The Department of Music is seeking a classical saxophone instructor to provide individual instruction, group studio class, and saxophone quartet coaching to saxophone students. Individual instruction will involve teaching .5-hour and 1-hour weekly lessons to approximately 7-11 undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors. Studio class will occur 1 hour per week, during which time students enrolled in private instruction will perform, study, collaborate, and receive feedback collectively. Quartet coaching will occur 1 hour per week for students enrolled in the saxophone quartet chamber ensemble. The instructor will also be responsible for preparing students for end-of-semester juries and routine performances.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree or commensurate professional experience and experience teaching individual lessons are required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Doctorate in saxophone performance or closely related field; 2 years teaching experience at the college level; experience coaching small performance ensembles. Applicants with additional experience teaching private jazz saxophone lessons, particularly at the collegiate level, are encouraged to apply for both this position and the temporary jazz saxophone lecturer position available through the UNC Department of Music.
