Job description

Winthrop University is seeking applicants with expertise in organic or biochemistry for a multi-year, non-tenure-track Instructor of Chemistry position, employment to begin August 2027.

The Chemistry Department (https://www.winthrop.edu/cas/chemistry/) hosts ACS-approved and ASBMB-accredited chemistry and biochemistry undergraduate programs focused on student professional development and career readiness. The department offers small classes with rigorous, innovative curricula and emphasizes year-round engagement in national-caliber undergraduate research. The successful candidate will join a collegial team of 10 other full-time chemistry/biochemistry faculty and two support scientists housed in modern facilities, including newly renovated teaching labs and excellent instrumentation for teaching and research.

Review of applications will begin on October 23, 2026. Application materials received after this date may be considered if an acceptable candidate has not been found.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Develop and teach undergraduate courses in General Chemistry lecture and lab, as well as introductory-level organic or biochemistry courses. The latter may include introductory GOB courses (i.e., survey of General-Organic-Biochemistry).
  2. Provide professional service to students, the department, university, and scientific community in areas of mutual interest. Responsibilities could include one or more of the following, depending on the candidate’s interests and strengths: coordinating retention and/or assessment efforts for introductory chemistry courses; leading the department tutoring program; advising student organizations; coordinating industrial internship opportunities; and/or leading K-12 outreach efforts.
Required Qualifications
  1. MS and/or PhD including 18 graduate hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related discipline.
  2. Strong background and demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate General Chemistry lecture and lab, as well as introductory organic or biochemistry coursework.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Two or more years of chemistry/biochemistry teaching experience is preferred, ideally as instructor of record (i.e., lead instructor).
Employment Conditions

Full-time, multi-year, non-tenure-track appointment; renewable, with instructional duties during the academic years (9 months, Aug. 16 – May 15), and the option to teach (or not) during the summers for additional compensation.
