Job summary

Qualifications

• Requires an associate degree in health information or medical field.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred in health information or medical field.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned courses with theory and clinical skills in Health Information Technology.
• Delivery may be classroom, lab, web-based, or field experiences.
• Demonstrate competence in teaching and use of technology in instruction.
• Develop and use syllabi per department guidelines; submit to chair.
• Plan and use diverse teaching methods and materials to meet objectives for students with different backgrounds and learning styles.
• Evaluate students and provide timely progress feedback; maintain accurate records (roll sheets, grade sheets).
• Review and select textbooks and learning materials; teach at varied times/locations as needed.
• Distribute completion certificates and advise students on subsequent courses and opportunities.
• Participate in curriculum development and revision to meet professional standards.

SUMMARY

Provide the learning activities and support that will lead to the achievement of the course objectives and contribute to the educational environment of the college and the community.

The role of the Instructional Faculty encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional develop and institutional and community service.

Provide quality instruction and integrating meaningful classroom activities and valuable experiences that facilitate student learning goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching

1. Teach assigned courses to include theory and clinical skills related to the Health Information Technology fiel
2. Instruction may include classroom, laboratory, web-based or field experience delivery methods;
3. Demonstrate skill and knowledge in the teaching discipline;
4. Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and willingness to explore and improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing new innovative instructional methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods;
5. Develop and use a syllabus for each course or laboratory within college, discipline, and departmental guidelines and submit one copy to the department chair;
6. Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and which are appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles, including the competence and interest in the use of technology;
7. Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achieving of stated course objectives and inform them in a timely manner of their progress in the course;
8. Keep accurate student and class records (roll sheets, grade sheets and other records as required by the specific program), and submit reports and forms within requested timelines;
9. Review, evaluate, and recommend student textbooks and learning materials;
10. Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs;
11. Distribute certificates of completion to students and meet with individual students to make appropriate recommendations to subsequent courses;
12. Participate in the development of new curriculum as needed; and
13. Review, evaluate and recommend student textbooks and learning materials.

Academic advising

1. Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods;
2. Provide advice and assistance to students regarding instructional or program-specific issues;
3. Make presentations about MBOP and CCS programs-its subject matter, objectives, and opportunities for further study (transfer opportunities), and opportunities for work (co-ops, part-time, work-study) and careers, specials clubs and activities available, support services, scholarships, etc.;
4. Serve as advisor/mentor/tutor to MBOP and CCS students; and
5. Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community.

Professional development

1. Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair;
2. Keep pace with developments in the discipline;
3. Learn and apply technologies that support student learning; and
4. Participate in the evaluation process for self, department, and college.

Institutional and community service

1. Participate in discipline committee or program meetings and activities;
2. Actively participate in department, college or system meetings and/or committees.
3. Be familiar with and adhere to all policies and procedures of HCC;
4. Participate in college-related activities such as student activities, selection of faculty, community education, recruitment of students, and/or special programs;
5. Participate in activities required to maintain program and college accreditation standards;
6. Participate in the HCC planning process by assisting in the formulation of departmental objectives and goals and establishing budget guidelines; and
7. Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula and practices to assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines and requirements of business/industry, and higher education.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION

Associate’s degree in any Health Information or Medical Field required

Bachelor’s degree or higher in any Health Information or Medical Field preferred

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrative (RHIA) required

National certification by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) required

EXPERIENCE

1 year of college level teaching experience or 3 years as a Health Information Technician required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Competent in the use of technology in the classroom and willing to explore new instructional technological methodologies.
2. Ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning-centered environment.
3. Ability to demonstrate intermediate to advanced hands-on techniques and skills related to the discipline.
4. Ability to communicate with with staff and students with different academic and socio-economic backgrounds and disabilities.
