Job description

Instructor: Environmental Art/Media/Communications

Middlebury: Middlebury School of the Environment: Middlebury School of the Environment

Location: Monterey, California

Open Date: Dec 01, 2021

The Middlebury School of the Environment (MSoE) offers a six-week residential summer program in sustainability and leadership for undergraduates. The program is typically located in international locations, but in summer 2022 will be based at Middlebury Institute for International Studies in Monterey, California. MSoE draws upon an experiential model that includes problem and project-based learning about sustainability-related topics as well as environmental leadership training.

We seek an environmental artist or media/communications specialist capable of teaching an introductory course in environmental art, media or communications. This course should be hands‑on, field‑based and draw upon local natural resources and sites in/around Monterey, California. Some materials and equipment are available, but the course should primarily draw upon inexpensive materials and readily available equipment for the creation of student products.

Additionally, this instructor will co‑teach a course titled Environmental Analysis. This course is an interdisciplinary exploration of the ways that scientists and artists/communications professionals can integrate skill sets to develop creative solutions to environmental challenges. In the past the course has been co‑taught by an ecologist and filmmaker. The partnership for 2022 depends on staffing.

We encourage artists and media/communications professionals that work in any medium to apply. Visual, performance and digital artists/communicators are encouraged. The principle goal is to establish the roles of art/communications in environmental progress in theory and practice and for MSoE students to create their own materials that embody this theory.

During the program's operation throughout June and July, all instructors are expected to work full‑time (approximately 40hrs/week). This includes some evenings and weekends as activities are scheduled.

MSoE attempts to create a strong learning community among students and faculty which includes participation in community building events, leadership workshops and recreational activities. The experience is quite different from many teaching positions in higher education. We seek creative, courageous and flexible applicants with a sense of humor and desire to operate as part of a team.

Specific responsibilities
  • Teach one class in environmental art, media or communications;
  • Co‑teach one class titled "Environmental Analysis";
  • Attend faculty meetings as requested;
  • Scout field sites for course labs and other experiential opportunities;
  • Assist in development of a program orientation and other professional/leadership development trainings;
  • Attend school events, including curricular/co-curricular/extra-curricular activities throughout the duration of the program

In addition to the salary, lodging will be provided.

Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in environmental art, media, communications or a related field. Exceptions may be considered for applicants with significant professional experience.
  • Significant teaching experience at the college level and in experiential settings.
  • Knowledge of local natural resources in/around Monterey, CA.
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills.

Applications deadline Is December 31, 2021
