Job description

Instructor, Electrical & Electromechanical Technology – FTT

Under the general direction and supervision of the Division Dean, Associate Dean, and Program Director, the Electrical & Electromechanical Technology Instructor plays a key role in shaping the next generation of skilled electricians and automation professionals. This position provides instruction at the Milford Campus, delivering hands‑on learning in classroom, lab, and online environments.

This is a full‑time temporary position with an expected end date of December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension through May 2027.

Teaching Responsibilities
  • National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for residential and commercial applications
  • Programming and installation of programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Industrial communications and electronics
  • Robotics and integrated automation
  • Installation and maintenance of electric motors and motor starters

In addition to these assignments, the instructor may teach in other locations, including the Prison Education Program (PEP).

Essential Functions
  • Deliver hands‑on, high‑impact instruction to a diverse group of students preparing for careers in electrical and automation fields.
  • Teach foundational and advanced electrical concepts, including residential and commercial wiring, industrial controls, and automation systems.
  • Bring modern industry into the classroom with PLC programming, robotics, integrated automation, CAD concepts, and electrical systems integration.
  • Instill a safety‑first mindset, including National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, Hazard Communication, and Right‑to‑Know requirements.
  • Design lessons, projects, and assessments that keep students engaged, challenged, and career‑ready.
Create Dynamic Learning Experiences
  • Build engaging presentations, demonstrations, and digital learning tools.
  • Leverage multimedia, simulations, and real‑world applications to connect theory to practice.
  • Continuously refresh instructional materials to reflect current electrical and automation industry standards.
Shape the Future of the Program
  • Help develop new courses and ensure the existing curriculum aligns with industry expectations and workforce needs.
  • Collaborate with industry partners, the Workforce Leadership Team (WLT), and program faculty.
  • Translate real‑world electrical and automation trends into meaningful, hands‑on learning experiences.
Keep the Lab Running Strong
  • Maintain modern electrical and automation labs, equipment, and tools in a safe, organized, and ready‑to‑use condition.
  • Assist with selecting and purchasing materials, components, and equipment to keep the program industry‑relevant and cutting‑edge.

  • Guide students through their academic journey—from foundational skills to career readiness in the electrical and automation fields.
  • Monitor progress, provide meaningful feedback, and support student growth and achievement.
  • Serve as a trusted mentor and advocate for student success.

Marginal Functions
  • Act as a technical advisor for the Electrical & Electromechanical Technology Program and collaborate with other college divisions to support high‑quality instruction and align with college policies and procedures.
  • Teach evening Continuing Education (CE), off‑campus courses, or customized training programs in electrical and automation topics to meet workforce and community needs.
  • Contribute to projects, programs, and activities across the College, TCA, division, and program as needed.
  • Be prepared to support instruction or program needs across multiple campuses, locations, and schedules, including varied days, hours, and shifts.
  • Take on additional duties and responsibilities that support student success, program quality, and overall College excellence.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions, programs, or areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work hours, shifts, days, and work location are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College; they may vary and are subject to modification.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Technical Expertise
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge and hands‑on experience in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology and automation systems.
  • Apply industry practices, including electrical theory, NEC standards, industrial controls, and system troubleshooting.
  • Install, operate, and maintain PLCs, industrial control systems, motors, and automation components.
  • Instruct students in safe and accurate operation of electrical systems, tools, and testing equipment.
  • Utilize technical resources such as electrical codes, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and industry reference materials.
Instructional & Classroom Management Skills
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and productive learning environment in both classroom and lab settings.
  • Foster positive, professional relationships with students, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Deliver instruction to a diverse student population using clear and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Organize and present course materials in a logical, timely, and engaging manner across classroom, lab, online, and hybrid formats.
  • Effectively utilize learning management systems (LMS) and instructional technologies to support student learning.
Assessment & Student Evaluation
  • Develop and implement effective assessment methods aligned with real‑world electrical and automation industry standards.
  • Design and administer quizzes, tests, lab evaluations, and performance‑based assessments tied to course objectives and demonstrations.
  • Provide timely feedback by grading and returning student work promptly to support student progress and achievement.
  • Evaluate student performance objectively in both classroom instruction and hands‑on lab environments.
Curriculum Development & Continuous Learning
  • Research and integrate current electrical and automation industry practices, standards, and technologies into instruction.
  • Gather knowledge from technical manuals, professional associations, industry partners, and online resources.
  • Deliver instruction aligned with course requirements, including designated clock hours and learning outcomes.
Collaboration & Program Support
  • Actively participate in program recruiting and outreach efforts to promote careers in electrical and automation technology.
  • Collaborate as a team member with program faculty and College colleagues to strengthen instructional quality and meet workforce needs.
  • Support student development of professionalism, safety awareness, and job readiness skills.
Physical & Technical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (2–4 hours) while supervising labs or instruction.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Working knowledge of PC applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, PLC programming software, and electrical design tools—or willingness to develop these skills within two (2) years of employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • Ability to use basic computer skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
  • The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • AAS Degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology or a directly related field and 2 years of current work experience in the related field.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology or a directly related field.
  • Journeyman Electrical License and an Electrical certificate.
  • Ten years of relevant work experience and the ability to complete an AAS within two (2) years of hire.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a related field.
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience in a technical, secondary, or post‑secondary education setting.
  • Advanced experience with PLC programming, industrial automation systems, and control systems integration.
  • Knowledge of robotics, mechatronics, and integrated automation systems.
  • Experience working with National Electrical Code (NEC) standards in residential, commercial, or industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development, competency‑based instruction, and industry‑aligned training programs.
  • Experience supporting college‑level learners in a hands‑on lab environment.
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
  • Industry certifications in electrical systems, automation, PLCs, or related technical fields (preferred).
Salary

$56,100 per year (2025‑2026 rate).

Benefits

SCC Ben Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full‑time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees must elect a health insurance option. If the cost of the selected insurance exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, the excess will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Unused SCC Ben Dollars will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. Amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but are not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).

Schedule

This is a full‐time regular position with an implied 40‑hour work week, based on a 175‑day work calendar. Teaching assignments are scheduled and approved by the College between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, based on the instructional work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or work week.
