The City of Wheat Ridge is seeking a part-time Dance Instructor to teach a range of dance styles at the Recreation Center. This role requires creating class content, ensuring participant safety, and fostering an inclusive environment. Candidates should be experienced in dance instruction and possess relevant certifications.
Wheat Ridge was founded during the 1859 Gold Rush as a rest stop for miners and later named for its golden wheat fields. As unsuccessful miners turned to farming, the area thrived with orchards, vegetable fields, and later, greenhouses, earning the title “Carnation City.” Incorporated in 1969, Wheat Ridge now offers a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. It operates as a home-rule city with a council-manager government, where the elected council sets policy, and the manager oversees daily operations and budgeting.

Responsibilities
Dance instruction of classes such as hip-hop, urban, ballet, tap, jazz, or other specialized dance forms.
Develop and teach class contentappropriate tothe course description and level; developappropriate toolsnecessary to offer quality programs; provide feedback to class participants and proper instruction in use of support materials.
Develop, design, promote, and teach Dance programming for children aged 3 to adult level.
Monitor participants and their ability toparticipate; monitor attire to properly perform, i.e., shoes, etc., if applicable.
Provide a safe environment for all participants; enforce all general building policies if applicable; complete any necessary reports and forms, i.e., Accident Reports, Health Forms, Attendance Records, Supply Requests, etc.
Attend scheduled meetings asrequired; responsible for finding a dependable,appropriate substituteupon their absence.
Responsible for preparation for program activities; prepare lesson plans, organize relative equipment; may berequiredto set-up and break-down materials used for instruction.Other duties assigned asappropriate bythe position.
Job Requirements
1 year of experienceis preferred, but not necessary withrelevanteducation and/or certifications.
Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required within 60 days of hire.
Knowledge of principles, practices,andteaching methods and techniques that provide positive motivation.
Knowledge of rules,regulations,anatomy, exercise science, related technique, choreography, class format andinjury prevention.
Skills in public relations.
Operation of necessary equipment.
Must be versatile in all developmental stages.
Plan, instruct, and supervise the assigned classand control large groups of people.
Follow instructions,remain current on the trends of the industry, andcommunicate effectively to the participants
Analyze situations quicklyanddetermineproper courses of action to be takenandwork with little or no supervision.
Analyze and correct facility safety hazards, engage in injury prevention and learn and adhere to the facility emergency procedures.
Establish andmaintaineffective working relationships.
Hours of Work, Location, and Work Environment
This is position is part-time and hours/schedule may vary. Work will be performed at the City of Wheat Ridge Recreation Center. Work is performed in an indoor setting where incumbent may be subject to noise and distraction and requires extended periods of hearing and speaking in a loud voice for up to an hour at a time. This position also requires muscular exertion and/or physical strain and frequent concentration on an activity where the flow of work is intermittent or the operation involves little attention or checking;requires ability to use walk, hands to fingers, reach, climb, bend, stoop, crouch and occasionally lift objects weighing less than 24 lbs. This position requires the use of all equipment available and necessary toteach and instruct in area of expertise in addition to use of a telephone, copier, and other office equipmenttoadhere to required policies/procedures.
