Job summary

Heights Philadelphia is seeking a College App Classroom teacher to facilitate the joint College App Classroom with the University of Pennsylvania’s Undergraduate Admissions. The role focuses on guiding high school students through college access topics and preparing them for higher education.

Classes meet about two days per week for 45–55 minutes. Teachers review materials, respond to student questions, and participate in co-planning groups for instructional support.

About this Role:

The College App Classroom teacher is responsible for facilitating Heights’ and the University of Pennsylvania’s Undergraduate Admissions’ college access course, College App Classroom.

Class meets approximately two days per week. Each class runs for 45-55 minutes. Teachers are not responsible for creating any lesson materials; however, teachers will review College App Classroom lesson materials and plan for responding to students’ questions, interests, and learning styles. Teachers are also expected to meet regularly in co-planning groups for instructional support.

The College App Classroom curriculum covers key topics in college access. Teachers will gain valuable experience in college access, classroom dynamics, and social-emotional learning. The role includes compensated prep time and meeting/ training time, in addition to instructional hours.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Reviewing all lesson materials prior to teaching, conducting additional research when necessary, anticipating student questions, and planning proactively for class discussions
• Delivering course slide deck for direct instruction in college access topics
• Fostering a positive learning environment, focusing on students’ social-emotional learning, assets, and diverse lived experiences
• Supporting completion of Heights’ student data forms
• Participating in ongoing professional development and mentorship through training sessions and co-planning meetings

About you:

• Undergraduate student or Graduate student
• At least one year of experience working with youth and understanding of trauma informed teaching practices required
• Familiar with basic topics in college access and financial aid
• Proactive in classroom management and supporting students’ social-emotional needs
• Punctual, present and responsible
• Able to navigate technology, including school audio-visual equipment and Google Docs
• Demonstrated growth mindset and commitment to continuous improvement
• Willing to conduct research in order to expand knowledge base and respond to student questions
• Flexible and responsive to variability in school environments
• Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
• Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
• Strong orientation to customer service, particularly with regard to students, partners and colleagues
• Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
• Fluency in the use of data and data systems. Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
• Must be able to work in a busy, often complex work environment that is generally climate controlled.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted on an occasional basis.
• Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
• Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
• Access to reliable transportation required
