Job summary

Heights Philadelphia is seeking a part-time Advisor to guide 6th–8th grade students toward high school placement and persistence, including developing materials and contributing to the advising curriculum.

You will deliver workshops, support college and career exploration content, and analyze student data to tailor interventions. Collaboration with the Middle Grades team is essential for program success.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth and understanding of trauma informed teaching practices required.
  • Must meet PA State background check requirements (PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint) at hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Fluency in data and data systems; data entry, reporting and review are expected.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting 1:1 advising with 8th graders during School Selection season (Sep-Nov) at one partner K-8 school.
  • Delivering workshops to Heights students at partner schools throughout the school year focused on high school persistence and postsecondary pathways.
  • Supporting the training of Middle Grades staff in delivering advising content.
  • Evaluate workshop effectiveness and make adjustments as necessary to meet evolving student needs.
  • Supporting the coordination of enrichment activities based on postsecondary pathways.
  • Attend monthly school-based team meetings and weekly Middle Grades team meetings.

About this Role:

The part-time Advisor advises students in 6th-8th grade towards high school placement and persistence. Advisors address a spectrum of student development areas, spanning life skills to crafting individual high school plans. This role will help inform the advising curriculum and develop materials in accordance with the advising scope & sequence. Along with the Middle Grades team, the part-time advisor will support the implementation of college & career exploration content for students, including delivering workshops and analyzing student data to inform targeted interventions and support strategies.

You’ll be responsible for:
  • Conducting 1:1 advising with 8th graders during School Selection season (Sep-Nov) at one partner K-8 school
  • Delivering workshops to Heights students at partner schools throughout the school year focused on high school persistence and postsecondary pathways.

  • Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
  • Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Strong orientation to customer service, particularly with regard to students, partners and colleagues
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
  • Fluency in the use of data and data systems. Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
  • Must adhere to COVID safety guidelines as established by Heights and/or its partners.
  • Office-based staff should be mindful of the organization’s strong recommendation that staff maintain up to date with COVID vaccination and boosters.
  • Site-based staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must submit to any COVID testing or other health screenings as required by the Department of Human Services and/or the School District of Philadelphia.
  • Must be able to work in a busy, often complex work environment that is generally climate controlled.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Access to reliable transportation required
