The instructor will also collaborate with faculty and staff, participate in curriculum and assessment activities, engage in professional development, and contribute to College initiatives.

The Biology Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in biology, with primary teaching responsibilities in Anatomy and Physiology courses. The instructor will teach lecture and laboratory courses that support the College’s university transfer, general education, and health-related programs. The instructor will develop and deliver engaging learning experiences, assess student learning, maintain current curriculum and instructional materials, and support student success. The instructor will also collaborate with faculty and staff, participate in curriculum and assessment activities, engage in professional development, and contribute to College initiatives.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties

• Teach assigned biology courses, with primary responsibility for Anatomy and Physiology lecture and laboratory courses, in accordance with established College workload requirements and instructional standards.
• Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging instructional activities that promote active learning and achievement of established student learning outcomes.
• Teach courses in a variety of instructional modalities and at assigned College locations as needed.
• Develop and maintain course syllabi, instructional materials, laboratory activities, assessments, and curriculum appropriate to Anatomy and Physiology and other assigned biological courses.
• Assess student learning, evaluate student work, and provide timely and substantive feedback.
• Maintain accurate student records, submit required College documentation by established deadlines, and maintain required office hours to support students.
• Maintain currency in Anatomy and Physiology, biology, and related disciplines through professional development and continued engagement with developments in the field and in teaching and learning.
• Support the development and revision of courses and curriculum to meet transfer requirements, program needs, and established learning outcomes.
• Participate in curriculum development, student learning assessment, program review, College committees, professional development, and institutional initiatives as assigned.
• Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to activities that support student success, academic programs, and the mission of the College
• Other duties as assigned by the College.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Completion of a master's degree in biology or a related field, or a master’s degree plus 18 graduate hours in Biology or a related field.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid state driver's license.

Specialized Training

A minimum of two years of teaching experience, preferably at a community college.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, biology, and related subject matter appropriate to assigned courses.
• Knowledge of effective instructional practices, student learning assessment, and laboratory-based instruction.
• Ability to effectively use instructional technology and learning management systems in a variety of instructional modalities.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to effectively support students with varying levels of academic preparation and learning needs.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff and maintain a safe, supportive learning environment.

Physical Demands

The position requires the ability to perform the physical activities associated with classroom and laboratory instruction, including standing and moving throughout the classroom or laboratory for extended periods; operating and demonstrating laboratory equipment and instructional materials; and setting up, moving, and storing laboratory supplies and equipment. The position also requires regular use of a computer and other instructional technology. Occasional lifting and moving of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
