Job description

Workweek: 40 hours | Flexible schedule to meet department needs, which may include evenings and weekends.

Position Summary: The Instructional Technologist supports the strategic implementation and meaningful adoption of academic technology tools, the learning management system (LMS), and digital accessibility practices to foster equitable and active teaching and learning across multiple modalities (in‑person, hybrid, and online), and support the achievement of institutional goals. Responsibilities include collaborating with faculty on the development and use of instructional technology to support effective teaching practices and high‑quality educational experiences across the college. In addition, this position is responsible for developing and conducting training on instructional practices and design principles that promote quality, innovation, and the integration of technology into the processes of teaching and learning.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Instructional Technology Administration and Leadership
  • Oversee the administration and maintenance of the LMS and other platforms supported by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) as listed on the CTL resource page
  • Research, learn and share information about best practices for applying LMS and academic technology in teaching and learning, new academic technology programs and strategies
  • Conduct ongoing research and program/software evaluation to recommend new instructional technologies for MCC faculty, and work on implementation if new technology is approved
  • Develop, implement, and provide training on audiovisual (AV) software and systems; support continuous improvement of AV technologies and instructional practices to enhance user experience, communication, and learning outcomes
Faculty Collaboration and Training
  • Respond to questions, solve problems, and provide training on new and existing software programs and academic technology issues
  • Provide one‑on‑one assistance to full‑time and adjunct faculty on issues related to instructional technologies as listed in the CTL resource page, including planning and facilitating the Open Lab
  • Design, develop, and deliver instructional technology workshops. Coordinate the logistics of training, including, but not limited to, scheduling the event, location, equipment, marketing, and registering participants
  • Assist with planning and implementation of Faculty Development Days and CTL events
  • Provide training and guidance to ensure digital content, software, and learning environments are accessible and inclusive for all users.
Administrative and Other Responsibilities
  • Manage the CTL website, including developing, updating, and maintaining appropriate resources (training manuals, tutorials, videos)
  • Seek grant funding opportunities to promote and deliver available technologies
  • Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline from a regionally accredited institution
  • One year or more of experience as the administrator for an LMS
  • Three years or more of teaching or training experience, with at least one year worked in a higher education setting
Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology or a related field
  • Five years or more of teaching experience in a higher education setting
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications to create digital content, including graphics, illustrations and video
Skills and Specifications
  • Expertise in learning management systems (preferably Canvas), including management, maintenance and evaluation; tool integration (multi‑media, academic technology and collaboration tools); and emerging educational technologies
  • Strong understanding of pedagogy/learning theories (including active and inclusive learning theories), assessment, instructional design models, approaches to hybrid and online learning and instructional technology, with demonstrated knowledge of developing learning materials using a Universal Design for Learning framework
  • Expertise in digital accessibility, including ADA standards and WCAG guidelines, and demonstrated ability to design and train others on digitally accessible materials
  • Expertise in academic technology software and applications, such as plagiarism detection tools, student response (polling) systems, video and lecture capture and virtual meetings
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly, train others and evaluate their use and effectiveness in learning environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exhibit the highest professional integrity and ability to work confidentially with discretion
  • Willingness to take risks and be innovative, see complex tasks through to completion, and accept responsibility for professional and personal growth
