Job summary

Position Summary

The Instructional Systems Designer I (ISD I) supports the design, development, and maintenance of critical training programs that enhance operational readiness and safety across the Department of Energy (DOE) enterprise. Working under the technical direction of senior instructional designers, the ISD I plays a foundational role in applying adult learning principles, supporting curriculum development, and ensuring training assets comply with DOE quality and safety standards.

  • Instructional Material Maintenance & Design: Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to design, update, and maintain engaging classroom, blended, and scenario-based learning materials using established instructional strategies.
  • Course Planning & Project Assistance: Support project planning activities, contribute to the development of project timelines, and assist with tracking milestones to ensure on-time deliverable submission.
  • Needs Assessment & Sequencing Support: Assist in conducting needs assessments, job/task analyses, and performance gap evaluations; support recommendations for instructional sequencing.
  • Performance Analysis Support: Assist with assessing performance outcomes to evaluate current versus desired skill levels, contributing to recommended training interventions.
  • Standards & Compliance: Apply established DOE and NTC instructional design standards, quality control procedures, and basic safety and security policies across all learning deliverables.
  • Professional Growth: Perform broader instructional design tasks under the mentorship and guidance of Level II and Level III ISDs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) supplemented by specialized training certifications; OR a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Instructional Design, Human and Organizational Performance, Education, or a related training-specific field.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressive, professional experience working as an Instructional Systems Designer or Curriculum Developer.
  • Project Execution: Demonstrated ability to execute training product maintenance and assist in managing project deliverables to achieve organizational goals.
Core Competencies

Fundamental understanding of adult learning theory and systematic instructional design methodologies (e.g., ADDIE / Systems Approach to Training).

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to partner effectively with team members, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and cross-functional teams.
Clearance:

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE HSPD-12 credential.
