Job summary

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry or a related field. Two (2) years of full time work/research experience in Chemistry or related field (related student work, TA experience, and/or research experience may be considered). Must be able to move lab supplies to include set up and breakdown of equipment weighing up to 50lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry or related field. Experience developing experimental set ups from a brief description of the requirements for the experiment. Experience working with instrumentation in related laboratories. Administrative experience in supporting a laboratory. Experience working in a related laboratory in a Higher Education environment.

Brief Description of Duties

The Instructional Support Technician is the chemist who is responsible for technical support services for the Organic and/or General Chemistry instructional laboratories and other laboratory courses, as may be appropriate. Over 1,000 undergraduate students enroll in the introductory, organic, and physical laboratory courses every semester. The success of our teaching program is critically dependent upon the staff member’s ability to work with the faculty to prepare and evaluate experiments and to provide a laboratory environment with functional instrumentation, accurately standardized reagents, and adequate supplies for the scheduled experiments. Evening hours are required, and the Instructional Support Technician needs to be flexible with the schedule.

• Assist faculty in the development of new laboratory experiments including the technical design of the experiments, the trial performance of laboratory exercises, and the preparation of materials used for class teaching. Analyze, design, and draw conclusions concerning the performance and practicability of experiments in time for modification before directing the preparation of replicas.

• Support active laboratory sessions and manage course preparation/stockroom. Assist in the administration functions associated with large multi-section courses:

  • Budget preparation, including experimental cost analysis.

  • Assist in registering and check-in of students.

  • Maintain the responsibility for hiring student assistants to work directly with the candidate.

  • Possess the ability to engage constructively and proactively with course instructors.

  • Assist in promoting and enforcing a rigorous safety culture.

  • Maintain accurate class attendance and breakage records.

• Operate, calibrate, maintain, repair, and modify instrumentation utilized in the organic, introductory, and physical undergraduate laboratories. Repairs may be mechanical, optical, electrical, or electronic in nature and may require collaboration with Departmental shops or manufacturers. Modify/adapt apparatus to meet pedagogical needs.

• Select supplies, chemicals, reagents, glassware, apparatus, and instruments, in terms of safety, quality, quantity, reliability of manufacturer, cost, and budgets which requires a knowledge and understanding of pedagogical objectives and non-routine laboratory techniques as well as routine technical and managerial skills.

• Prepare and standardize solutions, reagents, and set-ups needed for the laboratory experiments. Arrange for the collection of hazardous waste generated in the course of the experiment. Must be aware of laboratory safety requirements and practices.

• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
