Job summary

Education Through Music, Inc. seeks a full-time Instructional Supervisor to oversee NYC PreK-12 music teachers across partner schools. The role focuses on maintaining high-quality instruction, curricular programming, and professional conduct aligned with ETM standards.

You will conduct on-site observations, design development plans, provide actionable feedback, and guide teachers in lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management while supporting school partnerships and event planning.

Qualifications

  • Regular local travel is required to visit ETM partner school locations within NYC
  • Bachelor’s degree in music education is required
  • 6 years of primary or secondary classroom teaching experience
  • Expertise in choir, string orchestra, or band
  • Vocal/instrumental performance capabilities
  • Musical theory and notation literacy
  • Understanding of music pedagogy, educational theory, and child development
  • Knowledge of repertoire and genres
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and pedagogic methodology
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to give feedback and manage employee performance
  • Google Suite proficiency including Google Classroom
  • 1–2 years of Supervisory experience (not students)
  • Ability to walk stairs and lift up to 15lbs

Responsibilities

  • Provide actionable feedback to music teachers and document their progress
  • Utilize ETM’s progressive disciplinary policies to manage employee accountability
  • Assist, guide and train music teachers in developing activities, lesson plans, curriculum, and assessment strategies
  • Assist and train teachers on classroom management and implementation
  • Assist with management of school partnerships and communications with leadership
  • Assist in scheduling and executing student performances meeting ETM standards
  • Ensure ETM music rooms are organized and equipped with partner packages
  • Contribute to ETM’s professional development knowledge base and resources
  • Google Classroom Authors and Managers

Job description

Education Through Music, Inc. (ETM) is a non-profit organization that partners with New York City Public Schools to place music teachers and programs back into the school's curricula. We are looking for a full-time Instructional Supervisor.

The Instructional Supervisor will manage a cohort of NYC music teachers in PreK-12 partner schools across NYC to ensure high-quality instruction, curricular programming, and employee professionalism that meets Education Through Music’s quality standards.

Responsibilities
  • Regular on-site visits to observe music teacher’s classroom environment and instruction
  • Design an achievable professional development plan to strengthen music teachers’ skills, leverage the individual teacher’s current skill set, and capitalize on their strengths
  • Provide actionable feedback to music teachers and document their progress
  • Utilize ETM’s progressive disciplinary policies to manage employee accountability
  • Assist, guide and train music teachers in developing musical activities, lesson plans, curriculum, and assessment strategies, producing performances based on ETM benchmarks and training materials
  • Assist, guide, and train music teachers on classroom management and ensure its effective implementation
  • Assist with the management of school partnerships, including relationships and communications with school leadership, and the planning and execution of school-wide events
  • Assist in the scheduling, planning communication and execution of students’ in-school and public performances that meet ETM’s quality standards
  • Ensure all ETM music rooms and clean, organized, content-rich and fully equipped with ETM partner packages
  • Contribute and implement ETM’s professional development knowledge base, sessions, resources, and overall teacher training
  • Google Classroom Authors and Managers

Pay Range

$72,100- $85,000/year

Hiring is contingent upon the candidate receiving security clearance from the New York City Department of Education.

Requirements
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music education
  • 6 years of primary or secondary classroom teaching experience
  • Expertise in a choir, string orchestra, or band (concert or modern)
  • Vocal/instrumental performance capabilities
  • Musical theory and notation literacy
  • Understanding of music pedagogy, educational theory, and child development
  • Knowledge of specific musical repertoire and genres
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and pedagogic methodology
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to give feedback and manage an employee’s performance
  • Google Suite Proficiency, including Google Classroom
  • 1-2 years of Supervisory experience (not students)
  • ability to walk up several flights of stairs, and lift up to 15lbs of equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree
  • Seven years of primary or secondary classroom teaching experience (preferably in NYC schools)
  • New York State Teaching Certification
  • Educational leadership degree or experience
  • Staff/project management experience
  • K-12 teaching experience
  • Music Technology proficiency (Music First, Flat i.o., Soundtrap, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Danielson Framework for teaching
  • Experience teaching in both general music and instrumental ensemble (band/orchestra/modern band)
  • Advanced vocal or instrumental performance capabilities, particularly string instruments, piano, and vocal
  • Choral/instrumental conducting
  • Advanced practical understanding of music pedagogy, educational theory, and child development
  • Additional certifications i.e., Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and/or other music teaching pedagogies
