Instructional Student Assistant Pool in Department of Sociology (Academic Year 25/26)

Position Type: Instructional Student Assistant

Term of Appointment: Academic Year 2025/2026 (Fall or Spring, or both)

Hours of Appointment: up to 20 hours per week

Pay Rate: $17.86/hour

Positions Available: Multiple

Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs) in this classification perform teaching, grading and/or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over the course of an academic term. The work may be performed on-campus or at an off-campus public agency or private non-profit organization under an agreement with a campus in the CSU system.

Students applying for ISA positions must be admitted or registered as a CSU student. Academic Student Employees may not concurrently hold a faculty or staff position. Students with assignments in more than one student classification (i.e., Teaching Associate, Graduate Assistant, and Student Assistant) are restricted to working a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to full-time during academic break periods. The 20 hour per week maximum includes hours worked in all positions.

Instructional Student Assistants may provide assistance with grading (read/score objective questions and short essays using instructor provided key/rubric), administrative support (make copies or provide other course administrative support), tutoring (writing tutoring - SOC 310/CRIM 325/SOC 382) or lab support as determined by the department.

Courses that may be available to Instructional Student Assistants include but are not limited to:

  1. CRIM 125 “Introduction to Criminology and Justice Studies”
  2. CRIM 325 “Law and Society” (Writing Tutor)
  3. SOC 282L “Sociological Statistics Lab”
  4. SOC 275 “Emerald Triangle”
  5. SOC 302 “Forests and Culture”
  6. SOC 303 “Race and Inequalities”
  7. SOC 306 “The Changing Family”
  8. SOC 310 “Sociological Theory” (Writing Tutor)
  9. SOC 382 “Introduction to Social Research” (Writing Tutor)
Minimum Qualifications for this Classification

Knowledge and Abilities: Instructional Student Assistants must possess the ability to learn and perform assigned work; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; and accept responsibility. Completion of specific coursework may be required in order to teach, grade or tutor a course.

Special Qualifications: Admission or registration as a Humboldt student is required. On-Campus or Off-Campus Work-Study Instructional Student Assistants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Federal Work-Study Program, as determined by the campus' financial aid office.

Note: Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of Cal Poly Humboldt.

Department Hiring Criteria

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION: Applicants must be advanced Sociology or Criminology and Justice Studies majors who have completed the course in which they will be assigned to work with at least a B or better.

Applicants for the “writing tutor” positions must have written recommendation from their SOC 310, CRIM 325, or SOC 382 instructor confirming that they have strong writing skills and content knowledge.

Applicants for “non-writing tutor” positions must have written recommendation from a SOC/CJS instructor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants to, or current students of, the Sociology MA program will be given preference.
