Job summary

Valencia College is hiring four part-time Instructional Lab Assistants (Math Tutors) to join the Learning Support team at our West Campus Math Center. The role involves providing academic support and learning-centered tutoring to help students succeed in math courses.

The ideal candidate will have tutoring experience, completed Calculus I, strong communication and math skills, and may benefit from development opportunities. The position is primarily on-site with occasional virtual components.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting student learning in math labs
  • Ability to use tutoring software and lab equipment
  • Strong communication and math skills required

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and provide direction to students on labs, projects or related assignments in a lab facility. Answer questions regarding lab processes, software and hardware.
  • Prepare and set up laboratory materials, equipment and supplies in support of lab exercises. Maintain lab equipment and facilities.
  • Recommend to the student the appropriate course(s) or other measures essential for correcting academic deficiencies.
  • Train and supervise staff.
  • Provide additional testing, if appropriate, for the student.
  • Provide academic counseling for students.
  • Attend departmental and instructional meetings; organize and attend special events campus wide to inform students of available services.
  • Work with students and instructors to develop corrective action plans for students who are not making satisfactory progress.
  • Compile data and provide an evaluation of the appropriate skills program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

About Valencia’s Math Center:

Our West Campus Math Center provides learning support services for all math courses. Students seeking to improve their skills in mathematics have access to a variety of resources within the Math Center, including interactive software and knowledgeable staff.

Additional Information:

General Position Description

Assist in the implementation of a specified instructional program under the supervision of an appropriate faculty member, dean, Instructional Lab Supervisor, Lab Supervisor, Staff Instructional Assistant, Senior; and/or Laboratories Manager. Provide instructional services for students and assists them in mastering skills required for success within a course of study.

General Working Conditions

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus.
