Position Details

The Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology (HSHP) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction/Practice, Associate Professor of Instruction/Practice, or Professor of Instruction/Practice starting in January 2027. The faculty member will supervise laboratory courses in introductory and upper-level Human Physiology Labs (HHP:2410 and HHP:3550) while collaborating with lecture instructors/course supervisors to set the lab curriculum. In addition, the faculty member will work closely with the lab instructors, teaching assistants, and support staff to efficiently run HSHP teaching labs.

This position requires in-person instruction on campus in Iowa City, Monday through Friday; salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The hours of this position are based upon the times of assigned lab sections, scheduled office hours, and other lab meetings. Therefore, this position does not hold traditional hours in a given week.

The Department of HSHP is a thriving unit that has shown significant growth over the past several years and is currently the largest department at the University of Iowa, with 2600+ undergraduate students across six majors, including Human Physiology, Exercise Science, Health Studies, Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. To accommodate this growth, the department has recently moved into a new six-story, $249 million Health Science Academic Building that will house the Departments of HSHP, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Communication Sciences and Disorders. This new building has become a hub for innovative teaching and learning, community outreach and engagement, experiential education, and cutting‑edge biomedical, clinical, and community health‑related research.

Education Requirement

• Master's degree or PhD or equivalent in human physiology, human anatomy, kinesiology, or related field completed prior to the start date.

Required Qualifications

Desirable Qualifications

• PhD in human physiology, human anatomy, or kinesiology.
• Previous supervision of graduate teaching assistants or laboratory instructors.
• Demonstrated experience with undergraduate laboratory course design and/or development and support of curricular innovation.
