Purpose Statement

The job of Instructional Assistant-Special Programs Education Assistant for Students with High Needs is done for the purpose/s of under the direction of assigned personnel,assists and supports special education and other identified students in a classroom or similar learning situation; providing personal care assistance; and performing classroom tasks in support of the instructional process.

Essential Functions
  • Administers under supervision,first aid, medical assistance and personal care (e.g.tube feeding,dressing , toileting, diapering,transferring, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for students with medical
  • Assists special education students and other identified students, under the general direction of the teacher, (e. reading,explain words, reading to students, arts and crafts, classroom activities, individual assignments,go to job site with students, etc.) for the purpose of providing an opportunity to participate in classroom activities.
  • Attends meetings as requested (e. inservice training, workshops, IEP's, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information.
  • Confers with teacher/s (special education and/or general education) and district personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP programming.
  • Implement de-escalation strategies (e.g. seclusion, restraints, escorts, ) for the purpose of maintaining student(s) safety, privacy and dignity.
  • Instructs special education students and other identified students, one on one or in small groups (e. math groups, providing proper examples, reading, behavioral skills,daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) for the purpose of assisting students in making progress on their IEP goals.
  • Maintains instructional materials, data, and/or student files/records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing accurate information for progress monitoring.
  • Monitors students (e.g.library, field trips, classroom activities, lunch room,bus, hallways, recess,job sites, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive learning
  • Performs data tracking and instructional assistance for the purpose of supporting the teacher.
  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of providing documentation and/or communicating information to appropriate
  • Responds to inquiries from staff (e. administrators, psychologists, teachers , counselors, etc.) for the purpose of providing relevant information applicable to supporting the IEP programming.
  • Support and assist social and emotional learning (e.g.sensory and emotional regulation, implementing behavior strategies, etc.) for the purpose of teaching students appropriate behavior, social and emotional strategies and skills.

Job Requirements : Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities; de-escalation and restraint training; subject matter taught in assigned classrooms; and stages of child development.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: understanding of, and the ability to utilize basic technology such as computers and devices; and prepare and maintain accurate documentation.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups, including adults and students with varied abilities and backgrounds; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting patience and compassion; and working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 35% walking, and 35% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience: Education:

Job related experience is required. High School diploma or equivalent.
