This position requires the applicant to meet one of the following qualifications:
- Obtained an Associate’s (or higher) degree
- Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (equivalent of 72 credits)
- Passed a Paraprofessional Assessment prior to starting employment

JOB GOAL: The goal of the Instructional Assistant, under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher, is to perform a variety of tasks assisting the teacher in developing an instructional program by working with students individually or in small/large groups; prepare instructional materials, maintain classroom discipline, and conduct planned activities using teacher-designated methods and materials. Some positions also require aptitude and skill in working with students with disabilities or specific learning needs.

- Ability to work harmoniously with others and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students and staff
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding staff and student information
- In an ESL/migrant support position, must be bilingual in Spanish, English, or other languages as specified by the administration (speak, read, and write)
- Ability to supervise individuals or groups of students in an instructional setting without constant teacher oversight; work in a team environment
- Ability to deliver instructional programs to students with moderate to severe learning and/or physical disabilities and/or social behavioral support needs
- Ability to work effectively in physically and emotionally demanding environments; perform physically demanding tasks
- Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, as required by specific job assignment
- Ability to work with students requiring attention to basic feeding and personal hygiene needs, as required by specific job assignment
- Ability to type accurately; operate standard office equipment such as computer, copier, and phone; use Google suite applications to create documents, sheets, slides, and send/receive emails; operate audio-visual equipment
- Knowledge of English language usage, mathematics, and a basic understanding of subjects in which this position provides assistance
- Perform physical requirements such as moderate stamina; frequent standing, walking, bending, and stooping; physical restraint of students as needed in accordance with guidelines; possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to injuries and illnesses
- Additional abilities as deemed appropriate by the School Board or Administration
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.
- Assist teachers in planning and implementing learning experiences; provide feedback on student performance, progress, and testing activities
- Assist in devising strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual student needs, interests, and abilities
- Assist in instructing students in group or one-on-one settings, often without direct supervision; revise lesson plans or strategies as needed to meet IEP goals
- Provide for students' physical needs such as toileting, feeding, therapy, and related needs
- Assist in monitoring classroom management per district discipline procedures, including physical restraint, movement, lifting, and carrying of students
- Supervise students in and outside the classroom, ensuring a safe environment
- Perform clerical functions like record keeping, monitoring assignments, IEP development, maintaining files
- Assist with supervision during emergency drills, assemblies, and recess
- Support large group activities such as reading aloud and storytelling
- Read to students, listen to students read, and engage in oral communication
- Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make-up work
- Handle discipline issues according to district procedures
- Alert teachers to issues or information about individual students
- Serve as main contact and advisor for substitute teachers in the absence of the regular teacher
- Participate in in-service training as assigned
- Perform other tasks as deemed appropriate by the Board or Administration
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or equivalent per OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid First Aid card, including HIV training
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
- Must be highly qualified (Associate’s degree, two years of college, or successful completion of paraprofessional skills test such as ParaPro or WorkKeys)
- For Post High – valid Oregon licensure for transporting students
