OVERVIEW:

The Behavior Support Instructional Assistant works with students, staff, and families to support positive student behavior, social-emotional growth, and academic engagement. This position focuses on proactive behavior intervention, crisis support, and collaboration with school teams to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with building administrators to implement behavior plans, interventions, and adhere to the guidelines in the Student Code of Conduct.
• Support supervision during high-traffic times (arrival, passing time, lunch, dismissal).
• Assist with student follow-up after discipline incidents (re-entry conversations, reflection completion, restorative steps).
• Monitor students assigned to behavior intervention spaces or reset rooms.
• Support implementation of PBIS/MTSS Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavior supports.
• Assist with tracking behavior data, referrals, attendance concerns, and intervention progress as directed.
• Maintain confidentiality and accurate documentation related to student behavior and interventions.
• Build positive, respectful relationships with students to encourage accountability and growth.
• Serve as a consistent adult presence for students needing additional behavioral support.
• Communicate regularly with the Dean of Students and building administration regarding student progress and concerns.
• Support enforcement of school expectations, policies, and procedures.
• Assist in maintaining a calm, orderly environment aligned with school culture and values.
• Participate in safety protocols, crisis response, and training as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate the following: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

• Completion of two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (equivalent of 60 credit hours), OR
• Completion of an Associate Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution, OR
• Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of an approved formal state academic assessment in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
    • Current State Board of Education Approved Assessments:
      • College Board's SAT – Must score at least a 480 on evidence-based reading and writing and a 530 on math
      • ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required Prior Approved Assessments
      • Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test.
      • MTTC Professional Readiness Examination.
      • WorkKeys® - Minimum Scores:
        • Reading for Information – 4
        • Applied Math – 4
        • Writing – 3
      • ACT (taken between 1/1/1989 - 10/1/2017) - Minimum Scores:
        • Reading – 22
        • Combined English and Writing – 22
        • Math – 22
      • Michigan Merit Examination (MME) (taken between 1/1/2007 and 1/31/2015). Minimum Scores:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the building for extended periods of time
• Frequent bending, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
• Ability to intervene physically when required, including:
• Implementing approved de-escalation and safety techniques.
• Assisting with safe physical redirection or restraint in accordance with district policy and training.
• Ability to lift or assist students, typically up to 40–50 pounds, as needed for safety.
• Ability to respond quickly to behavioral incidents or emergencies.
• Tolerance for high-stress situations, loud environments, and unpredictable behaviors.
• Sufficient vision, hearing, and communication skills to monitor student behavior and respond appropriately.
