Instructional Aide (Behavior Intervention Assistant) – Middle School

Lorena ISD, Middle School – Lorena, Texas.

Job Summary
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under teacher direction to give special education students the opportunity to participate in classroom activities.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and modeling behavior and instructional support plans to meet individual student needs and reinforce learning activities.
  • Assist in preparing and adapting instructional materials to facilitate student learning and performance.
  • Assist in training staff, parents, and pupils in specialized instructional strategies and techniques for behavior intervention.
  • Assist with data collection and assessments for behavior support services to monitor and report progress with identified goals.
  • Implement and model alternative communication intervention strategies to teach students effective communication.
  • Implement social skill development techniques, including social stories, peer facilitation, and peer training to help students achieve academic, social, emotional, and behavioral goals.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to support special education needs.
  • Monitor and record data on academic and/or behavioral information to measure student progress in identified areas.
  • Record appropriate data for academic/behavioral information and progress tracking.
  • Participate in staff development programs to learn new skills relevant to working with students with disabilities and/or peers.
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. fights, inappropriate social behavior) to provide documentation and communicate information to appropriate personnel.
  • Supervise pupils at assemblies, field trips, lunch or recess areas, halls and grounds to maximize independence and assimilation within the school environment.
  • Travel to school sites as required to perform services across varied sites.

Qualifications
  • Certified per No Child Left Behind requirements.
  • High School Diploma or GED and a “Highly Qualified” training certification; or at least 48 hours of college or an associate’s degree.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to work well with students and adults and communicate effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all situations in or out of the school environment.
  • Follow directions, schedules, and Special Education programs as directed by the classroom teacher or principal.
  • Understand the implications of a disability and translate that understanding into effective teaching practices as modeled by the classroom teacher.
  • Maintain control under stressful situations.
Physical Demands

The physical demands described in this job include regularly sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands and arms to reach, grab, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; occasionally lifting or moving up to 75 pounds; performing a two‑man lift up to 200 pounds; and effectively performing restraint techniques per Lorena ISD guidelines. Vision ability required is close, peripheral, distance and focus adjustment.
