Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC) funds a two-year, paid IDD Fellowship Program with VISTA assignments to strengthen partnerships, evaluation, and community engagement. Fellows help alleviate financial strain for people with disabilities and gain leadership and professional skills in health advocacy.
The program offers full-time work, housing for some cases, and a pathway to growth in nonprofit leadership across various partner states.
Institute for Exceptional Care (IEC) is a national nonprofit working to make healthcare safer and more effective for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD)—a population that is too often misunderstood in clinical settings. Our new program, the IDD Fellowship Program, is a two-year, paid fellowship focused on workforce development for working-age adults with disabilities. The program was developed in response to the demand from self-advocates for paid leadership roles, professional skill-building, and career development opportunities. The program will train adults with IDD to become leaders in health advocacy and stronger, more confident job seekers. We believe that a Programs and Partnerships VISTA, a Database and Evaluations VISTA, and a Communications and Fund Development VISTA would significantly contribute to the Fellowship Program's overarching goal to alleviate financial strain for low-income, under- or unemployed persons with disabilities by: strengthening existing partnerships, developing a strategy for selecting and onboarding new partners in different states, establishing guidelines and strategies for program evaluation, creating new compelling methods for engaging stakeholders and donors, and building stronger, more responsive communities centered around our most vulnerable individuals.
