The Opportunity

Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) is seeking an IT Field Services Technician II to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of Cornell's wired, wireless, and voice network infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career network or telecommunications professional who enjoys hands‑on technical work, problem‑solving, and working across a dynamic university environment. You'll work alongside experienced network engineers and technicians while helping to maintain the critical infrastructure that supports teaching, research, and administrative operations across campus.

Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License. Out‑of‑state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment.

Following a comprehensive three-month onboarding and training period, this position participates in a rotating 24/7 on‑call schedule throughout the year.

What you will do

• Complete IT service orders for data network and voice infrastructure moves, adds, changes, and repairs.

• Gather equipment, tools, and other supplies needed to complete the work and coordinate with local IT staff and customers when necessary.

• Perform work as assigned in compliance with CIT standards, industry standards, and OSHA regulations.

• Assist in the installation and configuration of data network and voice electronics including, but not limited to ethernet switches, wireless access points, voice handsets, emergency phones, and UPS units.

• Troubleshoot performance issues and service outages for local area wired, wireless, and voice networks and collaborate with more senior IT Field Service Technicians and CIT engineering teams to identify solutions, if necessary.

• Assist in pulling, splicing, terminating, and testing copper and fiber optic cabling infrastructure in adherence with CIT‑engineered designs and scopes of work and properly label and document the installed cable plant.

• Assist in the deployment of new network and voice infrastructure for internal Enterprise Network Services initiatives, capital projects, building remodels, and hardware refresh projects in adherence with CIT‑engineered designs and scopes of work.

• Update and maintain online documentation of the physical communications plant.

• Work is performed daily at multiple campus locations – indoor and outdoor worksites – including construction areas, confined spaces, mechanical rooms, maintenance holes, and rooftops.

• Appropriate safety training must be completed and kept current, and safety gear must be worn as required.

What We Need

• Associate degree; up to one year or equivalent combination of education and experience

• Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining wired data, wireless data, voice, and special‑purpose network systems, including those based on copper twisted pair and fiber‑optic plants

• A basic understanding of telecommunications, data networking, and structured wiring

• Familiarity with different categories of cabling components, e.g., CAT5 / CAT 6 and fiber‑optics.

• Ability to read and comprehend engineering documents and then execute plans in the field.

• Solid interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to remain focused in a fast‑paced, team‑based, demanding, customer‑driven environment

• Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively

• Demonstrated problem‑solving, reasoning, and analytic skills are a must

• Must be able to fully and precisely work to specifications and standards that directly impact the operation and integrity of the university's services

• Understand customer needs and deliver service that customers request

• Ability to think through the tasks in each job assignment and prepare for efficient job completion.

• Proficient oral and written communication skills

• Ability to obtain and convey technical information to people of varying levels of knowledge and responsibility is essential

• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License. Out‑of‑state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment
