Job Overview

Fiber Installation Technician (Cable Installer) works inside and outside the home and is responsible for the installation and customer experience of new Broadband integrated digital TV, high speed Internet and voice services.

Responsibilities

• Connect fiber optic jumpers and drops—AERIAL, BURIED AND PLENUM.
• Run temporary fiber drops without posing a safety hazard to the public.
• Splice fiber drop connectors.
• Install ONT and power supplies.
• Run or reuse COAX or CAT5 wiring up to 50 feet.
• Verify service.
• Install Internet hubs and routers.
• Utilize MOCA technology where required.
• Configure customer‑owned computers and educate customers on Internet access.
• When video service is ordered, run COAX to TV boxes, run CAT5E from routers to network interface modules, take DB loss readings at all splitter points and terminated ends, initialize setup boxes for activation, program remote controls, and educate customers on video products and services.

Job Requirements

• Valid state driver’s license and non‑negligent driving record.
• Meet safety restriction weight limit of 275 lbs.; ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs.
• Must work flexible hours; work days may exceed normal hours; weekend and holiday work may be required.
• Must pass pre‑employment background check and drug/alcohol screen.
• Ability to visually perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
• Complete on‑the‑job and/or classroom training to remain competitive in telecommunications.
• Be on call and on standby in relation to workload.

Special Requirements

• Demonstrate knowledge of computer operating systems (e.g., MS 98SE, 2000, XP and above).
• Experience cabling electronic components such as modems, routers, TVs and home entertainment systems.
• Experience working with CAT5 and COAX wiring.
• Provide efficient, quality customer service both face‑to‑face and over the phone.
• Recognize and identify sales opportunities that meet customer and company needs, promoting and closing sales of products and services.
• Knowledge of basic electricity relevant to telecommunications, including voltage, current, resistance, power, grounding, insulation, Ohm’s Law, AC/DC, and basic electrical components and measurement instruments.
• Working knowledge of hand and power tools.
• Work well with others to achieve common goals and foster a cooperative climate; work independently in the field with little supervision.
• Perform job activities outdoors in varying weather conditions (e.g., extreme cold, heat, inclement weather).
• When working aloft, weight and tools combined must not exceed the 280‑pound weight limit.

Physical Demands

• Stand, talk, hear, use hands to operate tools and controls, and reach with hands and arms.
• Walk 10%; sit 5%; climb 10%; balance 5%; stand 15%; stoop 5%; kneel 5%; drive 20%; reach 10%; and smell 5%.
• Operate listed tools and equipment; perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods.
