Job summary

The School City of Hammond is seeking a dedicated high school assistant coach to support athletic programs under the athletic director and building principal. The role emphasizes planning, coordination, and directing assigned sports activities while promoting participation and sportsmanship.

The assistant coach will work with staff to establish program objectives, manage equipment, schedules, and eligibility, and ensure safety and compliance with all rules and policies.

Qualifications

• Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
• Thorough understanding of participants physically, mentally, emotionally.
• Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
• Desirable character and personality traits.
• High moral standards.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff members and the administration.
• Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations which pertain to the instructor’s areas of responsibility.
• Available to supervise activities beyond the school day.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible to the building principal and the school Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
• Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for implementation of these objectives.
• Develop his/her part of the athletic program to maximize participation and friendly competition.
• Coordinate closely with athletic activities that might conflict with the normal school program.
• Provide vigorous activities to develop physique and cardio-vascular health.
• Foster leadership and citizenship through sportsmanship.
• Promote self-expression, confidence, and discipline through physical activities.
• Be knowledgeable of applicable rules and policies from IHSAA and school bodies.
• Prepare budget, hire officials, requisition equipment, arrange transportation, and manage duties for efficient operation.
• Follow procedures for caring for injured athletes as outlined in the handbook.
• Ensure every participant has required physical examinations and signed certificates.
• Check player eligibility and submit IHSAA entry lists on time.
• Work with Athletics director on equipment, schedules, and coordination.
• Develop public relations with parents and local media.
• Attend staff meetings and professional growth activities.
• Collaborate to set standards for conduct, dress, and appearance.
