The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff is currently seeking applicants to fill an Inspector General (Administrative Specialist 3G) position, grade G33, in the Executive Administration Division.

About The Position

This is advanced executive level work of a difficult and diverse nature that is performed primarily within the executive or legislative branches of County government. An employee in this class works under the broadest of guidelines and supervision and frequently represents the branch of government to which assigned. Assignments are characteristically of a sensitive nature, frequently involving shifting priorities and significant local, state and/or federal policies and guidelines. Due to the level of work and assignments, extensive coordinative and/or supervisory skills are required. Work is evaluated based on the manner in which assignments are resolved.

About The Agency

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff has been a vital link in the criminal justice system for more than 300 years, providing the citizens of Prince George’s County with professional, transparent, and effective law enforcement service. The Office of the Sheriff serves as the law enforcement arm of the courts, responding to domestic violence calls, processing warrants, civil papers, domestic violence peace and protective orders, Emergency Psychiatric Petition (E.P.S.) orders, and the execution of evictions. The Office of the Sheriff is also responsible for court security, providing security and protection for visitors to our courthouses and securing courtrooms and holding areas. Deputies transport prisoners and are responsible for extraditing fugitives from other states.

Examples of Work
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND EVALUATION
  • Coordinates development and preparation of a variety of reports, data, policy, procedures, etc. for assigned units.
  • Carries out administrative operations of the functional area including research, proposal and implementation of projects; monitors and ensures accuracy of timeline, staff attendance and progress reports.
  • Conducts interviews, supervises and evaluates subordinate managers and provides training, counseling and direction to employees consistent with agency needs and objectives.
  • Participates in the budget and procurement processes for the Agency, providing assessments of current project and initiatives.
  • Originates complex reports and correspondence for signature of the Sheriff and other senior executive management staff.
TRAINING
  • Supervises Program and Course Design/Class Preparation.
  • Prepare or obtain all materials, equipment, handouts, visual aids and schedule classroom or other appropriate space or facility necessary for class presentation.
LEGAL RESEARCH AND COUNSEL
  • Research various legal questions, opinions, etc., as necessary to ensure agency conformance with federal, state and local laws.
  • As directed by the Sheriff and as required in the processing of legal documents, counsels the Sheriff and necessary staff on various complex legal questions that may arise.
PUBLIC RELATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL REPRESENTATION
  • Maintains positive intra/inter-governmental and public relations.

  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited College or University in Business Administration, Public Administration, Law Enforcement Administration, Criminal Justice, or JD, or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in governmental activities advising senior law enforcement leadership on issues related to accountability, adherence to best practices, policies, procedures, operations and program management
  • Experience above must have included at least three (3) years in a related supervisory capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous public safety or local government experience
  • Master’s Degree in law enforcement administration, criminal justice, or a related field, or Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Four (4) years of experience advising senior law enforcement leadership on pending personnel investigations and disciplinary matters; and critical incidents including in-custody deaths, deputy-involved shootings, and significant use of force incidents.
  • Six (6) years of experience analyzing and applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to law enforcement.
  • Four (4) years of experience implementing, directing, leading, and measuring the effectiveness of programs, initiatives, and procedures.

Conditions of Employment
