The Prince George's County Government Office of the Sheriff is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Investigator 1 position, grade Z18, in the Bureau of Field Operations / Fugitive Unit.

About the Position

This is entry-level professional inspectional and investigative work designed to evaluate, prepare, process, and defend complaints/cases of criminal, unfair, deceptive practices, and violations of County, State, and Federal laws administered by the agency to which assigned. Incumbents are responsible for generating accurate, complete, and comprehensive information required to conciliate/mediate complaints or to prepare cases for judicial action/consideration.

A significant aspect of the work involves extensive and critical contacts with the public, property owners, agents, attorneys, consumers, and other investigative agencies. At this level, work is performed under the close supervision of higher-level investigators in accordance with established agency policies, procedures, and regulations.

About the Agency

The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff has been a vital link in the criminal justice system for more than 300 years, providing the citizens of Prince George’s County with professional, transparent, and effective law enforcement service. The Office of the Sheriff serves as the law enforcement arm of the courts, responding to domestic violence calls, processing warrants, civil papers, domestic violence peace and protective orders, Emergency Psychiatric Petition (E.P.S.) orders, and the execution of evictions. The Office of the Sheriff is also responsible for court security, providing security and protection for visitors to our courthouses and securing courtrooms and holding areas. Deputies transport prisoners and are responsible for extraditing fugitives from other states.

RECEIVES NEW WARRANTS

• Possesses a working knowledge of the various Criminal Justice Information Systems used by the Office of the Sheriff.
• Possesses knowledge of current extradition criteria and limitations.
• Screens/responds to incoming calls from complainants, respondents, attorneys, and the public to identify/determine the validity of complaints received; to provide assistance/education to the caller; to obtain/gather information regarding specific cases; and/or refers calls to other agencies for assistance.

WARRANT CONTROL AND INVESTIGATION

• Conducts preliminary investigations of warrants in 10-day drawer and area drawers, as assigned.
• Investigates Type “4” warrants prior to being entered into MILES/NCIC.
• Investigates warrants to be sent to FBI Task Force and U.S. Marshals Task Force.
• Investigates requests to have Sheriff’s Office files combined or separated as required.
• Initiates Out of County investigations to facilitate the arrest and/or return of wanted persons to Prince George’s County.
• Updates the identification portion of the Warrant System as the investigation dictates.

WARRANT CASE MANAGEMENT

• Completes an Investigation Sheet for each warrant investigated.
• Communicates with internal and external personnel appropriately to maintain an orderly flow of business to best represent the interest of the Sheriff’s Office.
• Confers with/coordinates actions among complainants, witnesses, respondents, and their representatives and other agencies, to coordinate actions that will resolve and gain compliance with applicable County, federal laws, and established policies and procedures.

MAINTAINS ACCURATE STATISTICAL REPORTS, LOGS, FILES AND OTHER RECORDS AS REQUIRED

• Completes all logs, files, inventories, and transmittals as required by supervisors when due.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

• Bachelor's Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills such as criminology, law enforcement, business or public administration, one of the social sciences or related fields.
• A valid driver's license is required at the time of application.

An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities, in law enforcement, criminal justice, public safety or criminal investigations may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous public safety or local government experience
• Investigative Warrants experience.
• At least 6 months of criminal justice investigations experience
• Previous law enforcement experience.

Conditions of Employment

• Pass a background investigation, conducted by Prince Georges’ County Office of Human Resources Management, Public Safety Investigations Division.
• Pass a medical examination, including drug screening and random drug and alcohol tests.
• Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
• Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
