Job summary

Cox is seeking an Inspector Apprentice to document vehicle condition for in-lane and online processing of cosigned vehicles. You will describe interior and exterior condition, note odometer readings, identify damage and wear, and collect digital photos per criteria guidelines.

The role requires strong attention to detail, basic computer skills, and the ability to follow safety procedures while supporting the inspections team. Training toward Inspector Certification is available.

Job description

An Inspector Apprentice functions as a member of the Inspections team for an operating location with the primary responsibilities of providing accurate and complete documentation of overall vehicle condition. More specifically, the documentation provided by the Inspector is used to support the processing and sale of client/customer cosigned vehicles in lane and online. A basic understanding and delivery of the following is required: VIN recognition; proper notation of all options and equipment in vehicle; proper odometer reading and operable function; identification of damage, missing parts, and major mechanical problems; estimating repair cost pricing; recommending labor actions, severity, pricing; identifying value added options; identifying basic mechanical conditions; identifying common wear and tear; evaluating fluid levels; documenting vehicle condition in writing by completing appropriate Vehicle Condition Report; completing inspections process and data entry in appropriate time frames; collecting digital photos per specific criteria guidelines; test driving (when applicable); accurately determining grade using Manheim's Grading Scale (when applicable).

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify vehicle information based on work order information - identify damage, missing parts, and mechanical problems by inspecting all customer vehicles at time of receipt (i.e., interior, exterior, odometer reading, trunk area, engine compartment), noting any damage or repair to frame/paint, engine noise, AC/heater operation, radio, tire condition, etc.
  • Prepare and complete all necessary documentation.
  • Set up system for day-end; perform day-end procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge to ensure all policies and procedures are followed.
  • Write electronic condition reports (ECR).
  • Conduct OVE courtesy walks around inspections.
  • Maintain knowledge of system capabilities, knowledge of needed/job-relevant software packages, and web-based applications.
  • Maintain a working knowledge on improvements and changes concerning body mechanical, frame labor, inspection techniques, etc.
  • Visibly demonstrate safety commitment by following all safety and health procedures and modeling the behaviors related to such. Actively participate in support of all safety activities aligned with Safety Excellence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • May be required to work overtime as business needs dictate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Generally, less than 2 years of experience.
  • Safe drivers needed; valid driver's license required.
Preferred
  • Ability to drive standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Minimal knowledge of automotive body and mechanical work
  • 0-1 years of body shop, mechanical, claims adjuster or estimating experience
  • Ability to multitask and must be detail orientated
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience in navigating handheld and other documentation devices
  • Ability to pass Inspector Certification Exam within 90 days
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently required to crouch, bend and kneel to look at side or underneath car. Strength to lift hood or trunk. Bend while performing audits. Reach inside or underneath vehicle.
  • Near vision abilities required to find dings and scratches, paint work, hail damage, frame/unibody, other exterior damage and Interior damage. Able to identify exterior or interior colors
  • Ability to deal with different lighting (i.e., exterior and interior lighting, natural and artificial light)
  • Requires physical ability and mental acuity to execute the duties of the position successfully within required timeframes to meet business requirements.

USD 13.70 - 20.53 per hour

Compensation

Hourly pay rate is in the range of $13.70 - $20.53/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.
