Job summary

The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc. in Cambridge, MA is seeking an Inspector A to perform inspections and audits of purchased parts, materials, and quality control programs. You will interpret engineering drawings, approve or reject units, and ensure materials meet standards.

Responsibilities include creating inspection procedures, training staff, and generating reports. A minimum associate degree is required; a bachelor’s is preferred, with CQI certification valued.

Job Description Summary

The Inspector A is responsible for performing inspections and/or audits of purchased parts, materials, equipment and quality control programs. Interprets manufacturing drawings, diagrams, specifications and lists to approve or reject units or systems for in-process or final assemblies. Performs sampling and testing of incoming components and raw materials. Ensures raw materials, in-process, and finished products meet company standards. Determines or assists in determining methods and procedures necessary for inspection.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs inspections on a variety of materials, components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Types of inspections include visual, workmanship, dimensional, and electrical.
  • Generates and/or revises inspection procedures and associated flows.
  • Performs source inspections at off-site facilities.
  • Identifies problem areas and bottlenecks and assists in resolution.
  • Documents work results and generates inspection reports.
  • Generates procedures to ensure work is performed in a consistent manner.
  • Complies with safety and security rules and observes good housekeeping practices.
  • Assists and trains lower grade personnel toward achievement of inspection tasks.
  • Includes training of new hires to department and lab policies.
  • Accomplishes assignments independent of supervision.
Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Good time management, planning/organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Able to use and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work to inspection procedures.
  • Able to follow and execute to verbal and written instructions.
Education
  • A minimum Associates Degree in engineering or science program, A Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred.
  • In Lieu required college degree, a minimum of two years of technical schooling may be satisfied through one of the following.
  • High school diploma or its equivalents, plus two years of technical schooling related to engineering or science.
  • Quality Inspector Certification (CQI) from the American Society of Quality (ASQ)
Completion of Military Technical School Experience

When education requirements are met, requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience performing tasks related to the inspection of mechanical, electrical and/or electronic components*.

When education requirements are not met, requires a minimum of 10 years' experience performing tasks related to the inspection of mechanical, electrical and/or electronic components*.

*Typical Components: For Electronic Inspection - electronic components, printed wiring boards, circuit card assemblies, wafer die, MCM/MEMs products, harnesses, connectors, or other electro-mechanical assemblies. For Mechanical Inspection - mechanical stampings, moldings, castings, threaded components, sheet metal parts, and bearings. For Electrical Inspection - electronic components, printed wiring boards, circuit card assemblies, wafer die, MCM/MEMS products, harness, connectors, or other electro-mechanical assemblies.

Salary Range

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $51.66 - $51.66. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Union ranges will be in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement's approved rates by location and role. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and does not include bonuses or benefits.
