Job Overview

Inspection Assistant for the BAR Smog Check Referee Program. The role is 100% in-person at an assigned BAR Referee location and requires California residency. The position is a temporary, limited‑term role lasting one year with an hourly pay range of $18.00 to $22.00. A $1,000 sign‑on bonus is offered.

Responsibilities

• Perform emissions, OBD compliance, and other specialized inspections in high‐volume areas of the state.
• Assist Referee staff and management with Smog Check Referee duties and other assigned tasks.
• Use portable equipment at established and remote locations as needed.
• Conduct inspections and testing of vehicles for emissions and compliance verification.
• Communicate inspection results and information to vehicle owners and program management.
• Promote the mission of the Foundation and maintain a strong understanding of policies, procedures, and practices.
• Maintain a calm, helpful, and professional demeanor when interacting with consumers.
• Establish and maintain rapport with staff and students, attend meetings, and prepare/distribute reports.
• Respond to technical questions from consumers.

Qualifications

• Relevant AA or AS degree, or equivalent work experience, or a combination thereof.
• Minimum of one year of related work experience.
• BAR EO Inspector license.
• Experience performing vehicle smog inspections preferred but not required.
• Knowledge of automobile repair principles, California repair policies, and BAR smog check procedures.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and system maintenance applications.
• Strong initiative and the ability to learn quickly.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
