Job summary

Airgas is hiring an Inside Sales Representative with VMI capabilities for our Kent, WA location. This role collaborates with customers and branch teams to deliver industrial, medical, and specialty gases, as well as related tools and supplies.

You will process orders, manage VMI programs, and support inventory and deliveries to customer sites. The ideal candidate has 2–5 years in related roles, familiarity with SAP, a valid driver’s license, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years in industrial retail, inside sales, customer service, or inventory control.
  • Valid driver's license; must be 21+ to operate company vehicles.

Partners with customers to supply industrial, medical and specialty gases, welding equipment, power and hand tools, paint and other essential supplies. Collaborates with customers to recommend tools, hardware, materials, and effective approaches to achieve their project goals. Works together with the branch team to support customer deliveries using company vehicles by performing the following.

  • Dedicated to maintaining company policies including safety practices and the active use of personal protective equipment.
  • Provides excellent customer service to internal and external community members.
  • Ensures all required paperwork is accurately completed, including coding, costing, and pricing.
  • Partners with customers on tools, hardware, and materials, recommending effective methods to achieve their project goals.
  • Processes orders in the SAP system including cash and charge orders. May assist with reconciliation of cash and bank deposits.
  • Communicates warmly by phone, e‑mail, and in person with customers, sales staff, store managers, and team members, sharing helpful information on cost, ordering, and delivery times.
  • Collaborates on outreach strategies to build customer relationships and support branch growth.
  • May coordinate a transfer of merchandise requested by customers to and from other locations.
  • Answers customer questions concerning locations, prices, and practical applications of merchandise.
  • Processes total price and tax on merchandise purchased by customers using computer, calculator, or traditional methods to prepare an invoice.
  • Accepts payment and makes change for customer purchases. Wraps or bags merchandise for customers and assists in loading and unloading cylinders outside the storeroom.
  • Arranges with customers for the delivery of cylinder and/or hard goods requested.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and professional personal appearance by following the region's dress code policy.
  • May coordinate with the purchasing team to proactively address any product shortages or outages.
  • Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that builds meaningful relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Dedicated to following administrative and accounting‑related guidelines.
  • Stocks showroom shelves with merchandise, maintains welcoming showroom displays, and keeps warehouses stocked, clean, and organized.
  • Conducts and coordinates area customer VMI programs, including supportive delivery of product, restocking, and re‑supply as necessary.
  • Monitors customer usage and suggests adjustments to product levels to ensure maximum efficiency and product turn. Monitors inventory levels at customer sites.
  • Maintains the VMI System by cleaning, organizing, and re‑labeling bins. Organizes product additions and deletions.
  • Supports first level troubleshooting and basic maintenance of VMI equipment.
  • Safely guides company vehicles and equipment in compliance with State and Federal DOT and Airgas safety policies and procedures to assist with hotshot deliveries in the branch as needed. A driver file is required to be set up and maintained.
  • Uploads, delivers, and downloads safely to customers hardgoods items and cylinders containing compressed gases. Returns empty cylinders to plant for refilling.
  • Maintains load manifests and all other vehicle documents, ensuring they are properly completed and balanced with truck counts and shipping documents before and after deliveries.
  • Performs pre‑and post‑trip vehicle inspections, documenting deficiencies and ensuring all safety items are in good working order.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and professional personal appearance, and maintains vehicle appearance in a professional manner.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, alongside five years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ideally, two to five years of experience in industrial retail, inside sales, customer service, or inventory control roles within similar industries.
  • Strong driving skills and a valid driver's license from your state of residence. Candidates must be 21 years of age or older to meet vehicle operation guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar software systems. Intermediate computer skills, including the Google Platform, are highly welcomed.
  • Knowledge and experience with arc and gas welding (at least one year preferred).
  • Strong self‑management skills with a focus on collaborative goals, maintaining accuracy, and meeting shared milestones.
  • Ability to communicate thoughtfully and clearly by phone, email, or in person with customers, sales colleagues, Branch Managers, and team members.
  • Enjoys connecting and building positive relationships with people from diverse personalities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to process cash transactions accurately and reliably.
  • Proficiency in operating a forklift (or willingness to complete company‑provided forklift training and certification).
  • Ability to read and understand safety data sheets to ensure a safe environment for all.
  • Commitment to working within and supporting a drug‑free workplace environment.
