The Inside Buyer reports to the Regional Account Manager. This individual is responsible for marketing, advertising, and purchasing scrap metals (both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous) for the peddler and retail book of business within their defined geographic area. The incumbent ensures effective communication between the receiving facility, Outside Buyers, and management regarding the flow of material into the facilities.
The Inside Buyer reviews inspections and grading of purchased material, reports information to other buyers, and responds to scale receiving personnel when new suppliers arrive. They observe inspection and grading processes and price materials accordingly.
The Inside Buyer assesses potential for continued business, ensures smooth onboarding of new suppliers, and spends significant time seeking new business through cold calling or follow-up calls with interested companies.
They must be knowledgeable about handling and processing costs for all commodities, understand current market conditions, and be aware of customer and competitor pricing strategies.
This role operates within defined parameters, aiming for excellence in all aspects of commercial operations, providing high-quality products safely, effectively, and efficiently to minimize accidents and errors, and maximize profits.
The Inside Buyer aims to buy materials at a net profit, negotiate pricing, grow the customer base, educate customers on grading, analyze purchase tickets, assist in loss prevention, and collaborate on bids. They also conduct market research and strive for continuous improvement in customer experience and processes.
Supports internal controls, communicates issues, and suggests process improvements.
Internal: Commercial team, office staff, yard personnel. External: Customers, suppliers.
Office environment with occasional exposure to dirt/dust, work pressure during peak times, regional travel, and offsite customer visits.
Sitting, standing, walking, bending, vehicle operation, manual tasks, and communication. Visual acuity required.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing or Business preferred, 0-2 years industry sales experience, valid driver’s license, excellent customer service, communication, mathematical, and negotiation skills. Practical problem-solving ability required.
