Job summary

The Cleveland Clinic Akron General Pharmacy is seeking an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician - Sterile Compounding to support high-volume sterile preparations for the Akron General inpatient program.

Responsibilities include compounding per USP guidelines, assisting pharmacists, managing inventory, and operating dispensing automation in a team environment to ensure safe, efficient patient care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (Ohio) with Board certification.
• Completion of Pharmacy Technician training program including sterile compounding.
• Experience with hospital inpatient pharmacy is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist pharmacists in inpatient orders and documentation.
• Perform sterile compounding per USP <797> and hazardous drug regs.
• Manage inventory, restock automated dispensing cabinets, and conduct stock checks.
• Interact with Epic EHR and Pyxis/Carousels for dispensing automation.
• Provide patient-focused, compliant service in a fast-paced team.

The Pharmacy Technician – Sterile Compounding, Evenings supports high-volume sterile compounding operations within the inpatient pharmacy at Akron General, home to one of the busiest infusion programs in the region. As part of a collaborative, union-represented team, this caregiver prepares hazardous and non-hazardous sterile medications in accordance with established safety and regulatory standards, supports batching and advance preparation of compounded products, receives and manages medication inventory and supplies, and assists with operational pharmacy responsibilities as needed. This role requires strong attention to detail, a commitment to quality and compliance, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while supporting exceptional patient care.

A caregiver in this position will work evenings from 3:00pm to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday. Requirements include every other weekend and 2 holidays per year.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Assist pharmacists in filling inpatient orders, documentation, monitoring stock for outdated medications and disposing of medications.

• Compound medications according to USP795 regulations.

• Perform sterile compounding in compliance with USP <795> regulations.

• Perform sterile compounding of hazardous medications according to USP <797> regulations.

• Prepare, deliver and collect all pharmacy items throughout the facility.

• Re-stock automated dispensing cabinets.

• Perform floor checks, stock checks and assigned unit reviews.

• Complete all Pharmacy Keeper activities and inspections.

• Prepackage medications.

• Answer the telephone and assist callers that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist.

• Assist customers at the service window.

• Interact with Epic, our dispensing automation software (Pyxis and Carousels) and Pharmacy Keeper.

• Complete mandatory education and training to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• A high school diploma or GED

• Successful completion of a pharmacy department training program for Pharmacy Technicians including USP <797> sterile compounding competencies and hazardous drug compounding competencies

• Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy

• Certified Pharmacy Technician verified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

• Proficient typing skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Associate’s degree or completion of college coursework

• Compound Sterile Preparation (CPhT-CSP) from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

• Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician

• Experience in a hospital inpatient pharmacy

• Experience in a USP797 compliant sterile products compounding room

• Experience with Epic electronic healthcare record or similar programs

• Experience with Pharmacy Keeper or another IV workflow software system

• Understanding of medical terminology and calculations

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform work which requires constant standing and walking.
• Ability to routinely lift up to 20 pounds.
• A willingness to perform work which has infrequent disagreeable features and safety hazards.

• Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
