General Summary

Under general supervision, fills orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits, and general stock. Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments, and equipment. Performs related pharmacy duties such as drug product recalls and pharmacy area inspections. Delivers and picks up medications and related items to and from patient care areas. Assists with training of less experienced techs in their assigned areas.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all job duties.

Assist in training new or less experienced employees.

Perform monthly medication expiration audits at satellite locations.

Assist with safety audits and inspections in patient medication areas.

Prepare and dispense medication orders for inpatient and outpatient populations, including filling patient medications based on physician orders and patient profiles, under pharmacist supervision.

  • Deliver and pick up pharmacy documents and medications across departments.
  • Enter Admissions, Discharges, and Transfers (ADTs) into the computer system.
  • Package and label medications into unit doses for pharmacist approval.
  • Enter orders into the pharmacy system under pharmacist supervision, including TPN orders.
  • Prepare sterile intravenous medications using aseptic techniques.
  • Fill drug and supply requests as instructed.
  • Prepare and dispense controlled substances, maintain inventories, and coordinate with authorities for proper disposal.

Return reusable medications and supplies appropriately.

Maintain inventory levels of medications and supplies, tracking stock and ensuring availability per established par levels.

  • Verify incoming supplies against purchase requests and report discrepancies.
  • Resolve vendor issues or escalate to purchasing.
  • Remove expired medications from all care areas, document, and dispose of properly, including controlled substances.
  • Complete scheduled inventory counts for medications and supplies.
  • Replenish floor stock and process medication recalls as needed.

Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy, including proper storage and labeling of stock, and maintaining a neat appearance.

Generate reports from pharmacy databases, such as DEA use, inventory, and medication studies.

Respond to departmental requests and provide excellent customer service to user departments.

Follow departmental policies, safety, and infection control standards, including handling hazardous substances properly.

Assist with maintenance of pharmacy equipment and supplies, including refrigerators, hoods, and computers.

Participate in interviewing and training new staff, and attend ongoing training programs.

Perform duties as outlined in responsibility grids and shift checklists, and other related tasks as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program; certification preferred.
  • Maryland BOP registration required.
  • Completion of departmental IV training and certification.
  • At least three years of applicable experience.
  • Ability to perform mathematical operations for inventory and record-keeping.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and lift supplies up to 40 lbs. for extended periods.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with medical staff.

Compensation

  • Pay Range: $19.85 - $28
  • Additional Compensation: Shift differentials, Up to $1200 Sign-On Bonus
