General Summary
- Must be proficient in all Pharmacy Technician I, Competency 1 Duties/ Knowledge/ Skills/ Ability.
- Receives pharmaceuticals and maintains proper inventory levels. Complies with required drug storage and accountability in accordance with drug schedules, hospital, and state regulations. Performs related pharmacy duties as assigned. Delivers and picks up medications and related items to and from patient care areas. Assists pharmacy area customer needs.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all job duties.
- Packages or selects products, labels medications into unit doses for inspection and approval by the pharmacist. Fills drug and supply requests as instructed by the requestor and supervisor.
- Retail Pharmacy duties: Processes prescriptions per protocol: Data entry of HIPAA patient and insurance information supplied by customers. Enters correct prescription information into the computer for both online and offline verification. Selects correct drug product, fills prescriptions, and matches all labels. Files and dispenses prescriptions after pharmacist’s final check.
- Processes labels correctly, ensuring proper NDC usage, reprocessing prescriptions if NDC changes, and following packaging procedures for reconstitutions and ringing up.
- Delivers and picks up pharmacy documents and medications from various departments and patient care locations. Responds to requests from pharmacy satellites and patient care areas.
- Delivers medications to automated dispensing cabinets, responds to stockouts, loads medications, and addresses cabinet issues.
- Maintains knowledge of medical informatics systems including order-entry, automated dispensing, bar-code packaging, BCMA, and other clinical systems.
- Prepares and verifies controlled substances orders, maintains inventories, and coordinates returns to the narc vault. Documents all required information per policy.
- Maintains appropriate medication and supply inventory levels, tracks stock, and handles short medication appropriately. Checks incoming supplies, reports shortages, and replenishes stock as needed.
- Retrieves expired medications, documents, and disposes of them properly. Processes medication recalls and participates in bi-annual inventories.
- Resolves discrepancies with vendors, maintains compliance with storage and distribution policies, reports quality issues, and observes safety and infection control standards.
- Handles hazardous substances safely, maintains equipment, attends training, and follows shift responsibilities and duties.
